Colorado Inclusive Economy celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day. Formerly known as Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates Indigenous American peoples and honors their histories and cultures. Columbus was not the first foreign explorer to reach the Americas, and neither he nor those who came before him "discovered" the land. Indigenous Peoples had been living in the Western Hemisphere for tens of thousands of years. European contact brought catastrophic consequences, including widespread loss of life, cultural disruption, and massive land dispossession for Native peoples. The arrival of European explorers, who soon became settlers, led to the enslavement of Indigenous Peoples and the theft of their resources. Celebrating Columbus and similar explorers overlooks the tremendous suffering and loss experienced by Indigenous Peoples, both in the past and due to the ongoing impacts of colonialism today. We encourage everyone to advocate for the recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day in place of Columbus Day, both in schools and across cities, states, and beyond.
