Compass Health CEO Tom Sebastian joined other local health care leaders at the 2024 Healthcare Summit, hosted by the Economic Alliance Snohomish County, this Tuesday to discuss plans to bridge the gap between medical, mental and behavioral health care in Snohomish County. For Compass Health, the key to bridging that gap lies in systemic reform that will help resolve deep-rooted problems within Washington state’s community behavioral health system. That’s why Compass Health and Tom have a been advocating for statewide adoption of Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs): A nationally proven, evidence-based approach that will help ensure the sustainability and availability of high-quality community behavioral health care. Fortunately, Washington, as the Everett Herald reported, is on track to pilot the CCBHC model. “After seven years of advocacy,” Sebastian said, “I’m happy to say that Washington is moving forward.” Read more about the event and Tom’s insights at the Healthcare Summit here: https://ow.ly/p1lh50TwMSS Learn more about the CCBHC model here: https://lnkd.in/gzD9Fczg

About us
[For open positions, please visit: www.compasshealth.org/careers] Compass Health’s mission is to champion the quest for well-being throughout our communities, and advance behavioral health in Snohomish, Skagit, Island, San Juan, and Whatcom counties. Compass Health was first established as Parkland Lutheran Children’s Home in 1901, caring for orphaned children in Western Washington. In 1953, we hired our first psychiatrist and began providing mental health care for the children who lived at our home. In 1963, Congress passed the Community Mental Health Act, creating community-based service models and allowing for the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill. As a result, a variety of organizations were established in the northwest that ultimately became part of Compass Health, ensuring a full array of services for adults, children, and families, in the five counties we serve. In 2014, Compass Health merged with Whatcom Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic, expanding our service area to include Whatcom County. Today we serve over 18,000 people per year in our behavioral health programs. For more than 110 years, Compass Health has been providing innovative mental health services to children and adults from all walks of life suffering from mental illness. Our programs have grown and changed to reflect the needs of the community, and this flexibility has led to us becoming the largest and one of the most well respected mental health agencies in Western Washington. We provide services to individuals in Island, San Juan, Skagit, and Snohomish Counties. Most individuals who receive our services are on Medicaid, and many are homeless. Clients and/or their families typically have incomes below 50% of area median income, with many below 30%. A large emphasis of the discussion focused on staff recruitment and partnerships with our communities. Tom also highlighted the impactful work Compass Health is doing across our five-county region, including Phase II of the Broadway Campus Redevelopment Project, which will offer the full spectrum of behavioral health services, delivering accessible, comprehensive care to our communities. Last week, our team attended the Exploring Careers & Healthcare Opportunities (ECHO) Tour at Edmonds College, where they shared insights into their career paths and discussed different opportunities within the mental health field. It was great to see students explore potential futures while feeling reassured that not knowing their exact path right now is perfectly okay. During one of the rotations, we worked with some middle school students, leading them through a breathing exercise designed to help manage anxiety. It was a great opportunity to engage in conversations about mental wellness and career opportunities in behavioral healthcare.

At Compass Health, we believe that talent has no age limit. Earlier this week, an article published in The Times (UK) highlighted the challenges of ageism in the workplace, a topic just as relevant here in the United States. The headline: “Almost half of recruiters think 57 is too old for a job.” Compass Health is committed to breaking these barriers and ensuring that age is never a limit to opportunity. That's why we're especially proud to be recognized as a Certified Age-Friendly Employer, ensuring an inclusive environment where experience is valued, and opportunities are available for all individuals. If you're passionate about behavioral healthcare and want to join an agency that respects each person's unique journey, check out our current openings here: https://lnkd.in/d-R4Tep
