"You would never know what they were going through," says Wes Smith, Cone Health CareLink RN. The recovery effort is ongoing in Western N.C. and one of our Cone Health RN's volunteering his time in the mountains shares the experience of clinicians he has met at Haywood Regional Medical Center - A Duke LifePoint Hospital. "In this photo with my friends, the man sitting down is named Robbie. He is a nurse that works at Haywood but he lives in Asheville. He has power and cell service to his home but the flooding took out all the infrastructure to get water to his house. They have told him it will not be repaired for 4-8 months. Robbie is having to haul in 5 gallon buckets of water to his house, just to flush his toilet. Robbie said that he is lucky, the trailer just below his home washed away with the flooding, they still haven't found the trailer, the Mom and her 4 year old child who was in there with her. The lady in this photo is Olivia, her daughter has been wanting to play at the playground that was being repaired by the town of Canton. It got demolished again. She is just grateful that her home was left intact. Blake, young guy in the back was just a good guy and great clinician (and one of my new friends).
