In a heart emergency, time is everything. The faster a patient gets to the cath lab, the better their outcomes. At Atrium Health, we’ve built protocols that help emergency responders and care teams move quickly, getting heart attack patients the treatment they need without delay. The 15th Annual Dr. J. Lee Garvey, Jr. Chest Pain Network Summit brought together physicians, emergency responders and care teams to share best practices in chest pain evaluation and emergency cardiac care. Hosted by Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, the event focused on improving early recognition, streamlining care pathways, and advancing technologies like AI-driven ECG interpretation. Discussions covered: ▪️ Improving rapid heart attack detection and treatment ▪️ The role of AI in diagnosing cardiac emergencies ▪️ Optimizing patient flow for faster treatment ▪️ The latest in eCPR and resuscitation efforts Collaboration across emergency medicine and cardiology is critical to improving outcomes. For years, Karen Haynes, a 51-year-old guidance counselor from Barbados, struggled with the debilitating effects of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that made even the simplest tasks exhausting. With no access to specialized cardiac surgery in Barbados, she turned to Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, where a team of world-class physicians stepped in to provide the cardiac care she needed. Through the Atrium Health International Medical Outreach Program, a dedicated team led by Dr. Larry Watts traveled to Barbados to perform the country’s first-ever septal myectomy—a life-saving procedure that gave Karen her life back. “This was a direct answer to prayer and the exhilarating reassurance that miracles happen still,” Karen shared. Now, she’s embracing life’s simple joys again — walking on the beach with her husband and breathing easier than she has in years. Meet Michelle Boyd — director of Health Careers & Workforce Development at the Atrium Health South Piedmont Area Health Education Center. Michelle shares what deepens her passion for her career in health care: “For the past 20 years, I've worked with Atrium Health, currently serving as the director of Health Careers & Workforce Development at the South Piedmont Area Health Education Center. My team and I focus on creating impactful workforce development initiatives and professional development programs, from planning conferences to enriching high school and college students. I chose health care because I want to do my part to help strengthen our workforce and foster an environment where everyone feels welcome. It also aligns with my values, fills my cup and makes me leap out of bed each morning because it provides a sense of purpose. One of my most memorable experiences was organizing a statewide conference that connected 200 health science students with eager employers right here in Charlotte. It’s moments like this that deepen my passion for health care.”

Megan, a Certified Medical Assistant in pediatric cardiology at Atrium Health, knows firsthand what it’s like to be a heart patient. After undergoing her second open-heart surgery with Dr. Maxey, she was inspired to pursue a career in health care. Within a year of her post-op appointment, she joined the Congenital Heart Clinic, determined to make a difference. “Being a patient first has shaped my journey,” Megan shares. “I know what it’s like to feel scared or nervous, and that experience helps me connect with our patients in a special way.” Megan bridges both administrative and clinical responsibilities, ensuring patients feel supported and cared for. What she loves most is the connection—sharing laughs, easing fears, and making each child’s day a little brighter. Her motivation comes from her team and the patients she serves. To stay strong for them, she prioritizes her own heart health through diet and exercise. And her advice for those considering healthcare. “Go after your dreams.
