In this week's health news roundup: -A group of 13 Philadelphia-area health systems will no longer be using race-based algorithms to help make clinical decisions for lung, kidney, and OBGYN care. -The right to an abortion in Connecticut has been codified in state law for decades. However, access to abortion care can still be a challenge for low-income patients. -Adult day centers are the most racially diverse long-term care setting in the United States. Remembering Tom Ficklin— We were saddened to learn of the death of Tom Ficklin, a longtime New Haven community leader and an active member of CT Health’s fellows network. “Tom was a true example of what it meant to be committed to community and health equity. He demonstrated what it looks like to put genuine care for others into action,” said Tiffany Donelson, president and CEO of the Connecticut Health Foundation. “Tom will be tremendously missed, but his legacy will live on in our state and beyond.” https://lnkd.in/eCUAm3_5

Thank you to the Hispanic Health Council for inviting CT Health to be a part of their inaugural maternal health conference. Our president and CEO Tiffany Donelson moderated a panel discussion with Monique Rainford, MD, MBA, FACOG, Maria Perez-Brown and SciHonor Devotion, who brought diverse perspectives on solutions aimed at improving outcomes for mothers of all backgrounds. We hope to continue the conversation around maternal health in our state.

We are excited to announce that the Connecticut Health Foundation has convened an advisory committee to help inform the creation of a blueprint for maternal health equity in Connecticut, focused on Black patients. The advisory committee includes those with lived experience, decision-makers, and those working in the field. This work is facilitated by the Yale School of Public Health Global Health Leadership Initiative (GHLI) and the Yale School of Medicine Equity Research and Innovation Center (ERIC).
