Empowering youth with the key competencies needed to overcome barriers and succeed in education and employment.

About us

Our Piece of The Pie empowers 14 to 24 year-old urban youth with the key competencies to overcome obstacles and barriers and succeed in education and employment. The young people we help face many challenges. Whether it’s poverty based trauma, gang or justice involvement or victims of system wide issues, OPP focuses on providing the support young people need to achieve their goals! Our relationship-centered model is the key to our success. When a young person comes through our doors, he or she’s immediately connected with a trained, caring and proactive adult staff member who serves as a mentor and coach, building a lasting, personal relationship that spans the entire time that young person is enrolled at OPP. These adults, called Youth Development Specialists, help our youth find the spark that ignites their desire to improve their lives. They help young people navigate past barriers, and toward high school graduation, a college degree or vocational certification, and sustained post-education employment -- the keys to economic independence. Our staff is committed to the strategic and efficient stewardship of the organization’s resources to have the greatest impact on the youth we serve. We collect and use abundant data to measure our results, improve programs, and demonstrate success. As a leader in the youth development field, we identify, test, refine and employ best practices as part of our continuous improvement model. OPP’s unique model offers an effective combination of best practices in academic, employment training, and youth development services and an approach focused on the individual. While every young person receives a combination of academic, employment and youth development services, the exact plan that’s created for each youth addresses his or her specific needs and aspirations.

There are so many available resources to help people of all ages get an education, learning materials, and the safety equipment they need to be able to join the manufacturing workforce. We would be remiss if we didn't call out a few that Milliechel Ramirez was speaking about in this MFG Shake-Up episode such as Our Piece of the Pie, and the free tuition program at the CT State Community Colleges: https://buff.ly/4cQRX1z. 👉Today, Angel of Edgewood, Inc. had the honor of taking our Hartford Youth Service Corps/Our Piece of the Pie (OPP) students on an enlightening tour of the FOX61/CW20 studios. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Liz Barry Salvatore for her gracious invitation and insightful guidance, which educated our young adults on the inner workings of the news industry🎥. The students were thrilled to meet Keith McGilvery, Matt Scott, and Erika Arias who warmly welcomed them and took the time to take numerous pictures, making the experience even more memorable. Next, we headed over to Red Rock Tavern where we Don Mancini👉, the owner, treated our group of OPP/YSC students to lunch🍔. Don is a pillar of our community, whose unwavering dedication to philanthropy and service has made a significant impact on countless lives. Don's generosity and commitment to giving back have been evident since the inception of their family business. He has consistently supported numerous community initiatives, especially those benefiting children and youth. His kindness and generosity provided the students with not just a meal but an opportunity to feel valued and supported. Don's actions reflect his deep-rooted belief in nurturing the next generation and giving back to the community. 😇😇😇

✅In the spirit of community building, I had the pleasure to attend the 119k Comission Regional Meeting on July 23rd, 2024! ✅ An unspoken crisis that affects every town and city in Connecticut is currently underway. A startling 119,000 youth in the state are either disconnected or at risk. That represents one in five teenagers between the ages of 14 and 26 who are either unemployed or in danger of dropping out of school. With 119,000 futures at risk, there are 119,000 reasons to take immediate action. ✅In addition to this amazing meeting, one of my directors from Our Piece of the Pie, Girard Dawes, was a great addition to the conversation with his presentation on alternative educational settings with Opportunity Academy! ✅This encouraged me to speak on my postion as youth practitioner AND apart of the population in question! I will continue to everything I can to speck up with my peers and be empowered! ✅FELLOW YOUNG PEOPLE, YOU ARE WORTHY TO BR IN EVERY SPACE THAT YOU ENTER! #deionkelly #communitybuilding #youthadvocacy #peermentors Link: https://lnkd.in/e7YZi2Jd?
