About us
The Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) provides scientific expertise, social and technological innovations to support the conservation and recovery of biological diversity in its natural state through applied research, education, planning, and community service. We use GIS and remote sensing data to conduct assessments and planning in support of conservation and land use projects globally. We conduct research - alone or in collaboration with others - to actively seek creative new ways to address a wide range of ecological problems from endangered species to regional conservation planning. We develop innovative conservation tools, techniques, and analyses to help organizations, agencies, and companies utilize the best available conservation evidence. CBI is a non-profit 501(c)(3) founded in 1997 in Corvallis, Oregon with offices in California and Washington.

Roughly 40% of all bulk shipping globally is for coal, oil, and gas. This is often an overlooked aspect of the impact of fossil fuels on biodiversity, as we know that marine biodiversity is negatively impacted due to the introduction of: • Non-indigenous species, through the ballast waters and biofouling, with potential negative effects on native biodiversity • Contaminants, due in particular to accidental oil spills • Marine litter, due to poor waste management • Underwater noise, which disrupts marine life by affecting their communication and orientation. A shift to renewable energy is more critical now than ever. Join us and our partners as we discuss this and more during our Oct. 29 panel "Protecting Biodiversity & Advancing Renewables Through Energy-Water-Food Synergies". It is no secret that the scale, severity, and frequency of wildfire is increasing throughout the world. Despite the significant impacts on biodiversity, human health/safety, and C02 emissions, wildfire is largely overlooked in this year's COP16 and COP29 priorities. Conservation Biology Institute believes it is a critical topic for global leaders to study and address. If you feel the same way, we welcome you to review and add your signature to our open letter, petitioning the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to add wildfire to the COP17 and COP30 priorities. Global roadways spanned 22 million km in 2018 and are projected to expand 20% by 2050, including in biodiverse areas in the Amazon Basin, the Congo Basin and New Guinea. The number of medium-large road-killed mammals on Brazil's paved road network can reach almost 9 million yearly, representing a biomass of more than 10,000 tons. Indigenous Peoples and local communities hold resource-rich lands that are increasingly vulnerable to mining and logging where anti-deforestation laws are poorly enforced. These persistent threats to biodiversity require urgent solutions. Join our COP16 Colombia panel on habitat connectivity to contribute to a critical discussion on aspirations and actions. Panel Discussion Leveraging Traditional Knowledge and Modern Technology to Reduce Tropical Deforestation, ‘Ghost Road’ Expansion, and Habitat Fragmentation Time Oct. 24th (14:00 – 17:00) Location Ríostudio Cali (Avenida 4 Oeste, #4-84) Registration Link https://lnkd.in/gGH6PSeB Description Business-as-usual transport networks often create negative impacts on biodiversity through road expansion, incursion into both Indigenous communities and wildlife habitat, and through vehicle/wildlife collisions. This panel will explore means of achieving nature- and community-positive road building, and the importance of ensuring informed consent of impacted Indigenous communities. Currently, well over 90% of Botswana's energy is derived from coal, according to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the African Development Bank (ADB). However, the country has vast untapped #resources for #renewable energy. It has set an admirable target to increase renewable energy to 30% of its energy mix by 2030 and 50% by 2036. We are thrilled to include OBUILE MOREWANE (Green Energy and Sustainable Energy Association) in our COP16 Colombia panel to address the complexities and opportunities in this shift from coal to renewables/solar. The increased frequency and severity of #wildfire around the world has severe implications for global #biodiversity. Evidence-based solutions are needed to balance ecosystem health with human welfare and community safety. Wildfire resilience and recovery are largely overlooked in this year's COP16 Colombia. To our knowledge, Conservation Biology Institute's co-hosted events on this topic are the only wildfire-focused events taking place at #COP16Colombia. Please join us for these events: (Panel discussion) Global Challenges to Sustaining Biodiversity in an Era of Changing Fire Regimes Friday 25 October (14:00-17:00, Ríostudio Cali, Av. 4 Oeste, #4-84) Register here: https://lnkd.in/gx_PwRhT (Interactive workshop) International Viewpoints on Developing Community & Biodiversity Resilience to Wildfire under Global Change Monday 28 October (9:00-13:30, Ríostudio Cali, Av. 4 Oeste, #4-84) Register here: https://lnkd.in/gP7-YYjK Given the impact of fire and fire management strategies on biodiversity conservation, it is critical that wildfire resilience and recovery become a priority topic in future COPs. What are the challenges and opportunities associated with simultaneously implementing the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework while striving to meet the UN Global Renewables Pledge to triple renewable energy production by 2030? Collocating renewable energy and farming and grazing offers potential biodiversity benefits of increasing pollinator habitat, providing safe wildlife migration passages, and enhancing wildfire resilience and recovery. Join us at COP16 Colombia as Conservation Biology Institute, FUNDACION BARILOCHE, and REN21 co-host a panel discussion on increasing the resilience of food, water, and energy systems. Wildfire is an increasingly frequent and severe threat to global biodiversity. In fact, after the 2019-20 bushfires in Australia, the injury and death of 60,000 koalas contributed to the decision to declare the koala endangered in the country. Conservation Biology Institute and CREAF have joined forces to host two events at COP16 Colombia that will explore effective fire management strategies that protect humans while avoiding substantial ecological harm to and conflicts with biodiversity conservation.
