Saving wild ocean places, for us and future generations
About us
Marine Conservation Institute is a team of highly-experienced marine scientists and environmental policy advocates dedicated to saving ocean life for us and future generations. Our goal is to help create a worldwide system of strongly protected areas — Blue Parks (BlueParks.org) — to safeguard marine biodiversity. To enhance marine protection efforts in the U.S. and around the globe, we also built the world’s most comprehensive online marine protected area database, the Atlas of Marine Protection (mpatlas.org). We welcome your support in the form of donations, prospective board members, fundraising, and other campaigns. We'd love to hear from you!

📢 Spain 🇪🇸 has ratified the #HighSeasTreaty 🎉 We congratulate Spain for its leadership as the first 🇪🇺 nation to officially ratify the #BBNJ Treaty at the UN. Now 1️⃣6️⃣ Treaty champions have taken the lead in the #RaceForRatification! Their commitment to transforming the BBNJ Agreement into action has accelerated the race which is currently requiring 44 more ratifications for the implementation and entry into force by the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in June 2025. Exciting News from the Ross Sea MPA 🌊 We’re thrilled to announce our participation in the newly funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) for the Ross Sea region Marine Protected Area (MPA) – the largest MPA in the world. This initiative, supported by the National Science Foundation, will formalize critical connections between science, policy, and community partners to strengthen research and monitoring efforts in this pristine Antarctic ecosystem. The RCN will focus on: - Policy engagement - Community partner collaboration - Integrated science through data science, biophysical modeling, and monitoring With the Ross Sea region MPA’s first 10-year review approaching in 2027, this work is vital to ensure robust science informs effective management and conservation efforts. Together, we aim to set an example for collaboration in large-scale MPAs worldwide. 📊 Visual by Jack Pan #OceanConservation #RossSea #MarineProtectedAreas #MPAs #ScienceForPolicy #Antarctica

Ocean Night: Navigating a Plastic-Free Future On February 6, Plastic Odyssey will bring together leaders in ocean conservation to discuss the global plastic pollution crisis and explore innovative solutions. From community-driven recycling initiatives to large-scale ecosystem restoration, this event showcases how we can collaborate to chart a sustainable future. Dr. Sarah Hameed, Director of the Blue Parks initiative at Marine Conservation Institute, will share how the Blue Park Standard sets the global benchmark for effective marine protected areas. While marine protected areas are essential for safeguarding biodiversity and ocean health, addressing threats like plastic pollution is equally critical to ensuring these ecosystems thrive. 📅 February 6 | San Francisco RSVP here: https://lu.ma/gnjfr77i #MarineConservation #PlasticFreeFuture #BlueParkStandard #BlueParks
