Glaciers store approximately 68.7% of the world’s freshwater—but they’re disappearing rapidly. Beyond rising sea levels, changing meltwater flows cause floods, droughts, and landslides. This upcoming #WorldWaterDay, the United Nations Water is highlighting the importance of glacier preservation. Our #waterresources team helps our client partners navigate these climate impacts through resilient infrastructure planning. A climate scientist and resiliency expert, Michael McMahon equips decision-makers with essential data-driven insights. Creating cost-effective, long-term solutions that protect resources and communities facing these challenges fuels his passion. “In 1982, I visited the Columbia Icefield between Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. This ice field is the source of the Athabasca Glacier, which reached the marker in the image below 117 years ago. The shrinking glacier is a very real manifestation of the evolving climate patterns that are profoundly impacting the environment of this region and water management as far away as Edmonton and Calgary. Their rapid melting at a rate of about 16 feet (5 meters) a year will have long-term impacts on water supplies, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. The time is now to promote research on glaciers and climate adaptation, as well as advance policies that protect them.” – Mike McMahon, Technical Practice Manager, Resiliency #climateadaptation #climateresiliency #waterresources

What do a former butcher and professional figure skater have in common? They both took unconventional paths to join Consor’s Charleston, South Carolina, #structuralassessment team—proving that it’s never too late to build a career in infrastructure! Chris Benson, EIT, spent years working as a butcher before he pursued civil engineering. He didn’t just switch careers—he balanced working full-time, raising a family, and going to school to earn his civil engineering degree. Today, he leads assessments and helps maintain the safety and resilience of bridges and other infrastructure. Tim Dolensky mastered precision while touring the world as a professional figure skater before transitioning to a career that kept him closer to home. Drawn to bridge inspection’s active, team-driven nature, he joined Consor without prior engineering experience. Through on-the-job mentorship, he quickly adapted—now, he applies that same focus and attention to detail to evaluate bridges and structures, where precision is just as important. If you’re looking for a hands-on career where you can solve challenges and positively impact your community, structural assessment might be your next step. When facing droughts, wildfires, and extreme weather, communities need reliable access to clean drinking water more than ever. At nearly 100 years old, the Upper San Leandro Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a critical facility that supplies water to communities on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is working to future-proof this WTP through upgrades that include: ✔️ Structural improvements to enhance resilience during earthquakes and extreme weather. ✔️ Solids processing system improvements to increase plant capacity and operational efficiency. ✔️ Chemical system upgrades to improve treatment reliability and operational safety. ✔️ A new power building and distribution infrastructure to support long-term reliability. Upgrading a facility of this scale is complex—not just because of the scope of work but because the plant must remain fully operational throughout construction. Our team provides program and construction management services for this project, which includes proactive scheduling, cost control, quality assurance, office engineering, and inspection services for this complex, multi-year initiative. Shout-out to the EBMUD staff and Consor teammates who are delivering a more resilient, efficient WTP that will serve the community for years to come, even when challenges arise. #consorprojects #watertreatment #PMCM #programmanagement #constructionmanagement

As cities push for cleaner, more efficient energy solutions, the challenge of reducing emissions while keeping infrastructure resilient is top of mind. What if part of the answer was already flowing beneath our streets? In his latest feature for the Central States Water Environment Association Magazine, Peter Mulvaney, Consor’s Director of Utility Management, explores sewer thermal exchange (STX)—a way to harness thermal energy from our wastewater systems for heating and cooling buildings. STX not only lowers carbon footprints and energy costs but also opens new revenue streams for utilities. In his article on page 32, Pete breaks down how communities can turn wastewater into a powerful asset: https://lnkd.in/dmiKbXQJ For more on Consor’s utility management and advisory services, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gS-awKj3 #sustainability #wastewater #utilitymanagement
