When General Motors was exploring ways to enhance the sustainability of their operations, they turned to another trusted Michigan company, Consumers Energy. We worked closely with GM to identify tailored projects and programs that met their specific needs. Through our Renewable Energy Program, GM found a flexible, turnkey solution that utilizes solar and wind energy to support their sustainability goals and help protect the planet for future generations. By enrolling in and participating in sustainable programs, GM helps improve Michigan’s grid and supports job creation through the building and operation of renewable energy projects. See those tiny boxes in the sky? Those are line sensors, and they're a vital part of our commitment to a more reliable grid. The sensors use cutting edge technology to identify and prevent problems before they occur. This year alone, we're installing 3,000 sensors across the state, and, so far, they’re doing their job! In just the first quarter of this year, line sensors have prevented 95,160 minutes of customer outages - that's more than 65 days!

Meet David Allen. In the 1970s, he started at the Karn Plant and worked his way through various roles, finally achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a lineworker. One event from David’s near half-century of work sticks out. It was Easter weekend and David was out restoring power after a storm. As he was feeling upset about being away from his family and newborn son, two young girls came outside and thanked him with a plate of cookies for bringing back their electricity. “It’s the little things that make this job the best job in the world,” he reflects. After 47 years of service, David plans to retire this summer, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and kindness. We appreciate David and all lineworkers like him who ensure our communities stay powered and safe. Thank you, David, for your unwavering commitment!

Food pantries can be a lifeline for people struggling with food insecurity. And in Iosco County, PKL Cares is exactly that for hundreds of folks in need. That’s why the Consumers Energy Foundation is awarding them with one of the 2024 People Awards – a $250,000 grant to further their efforts. PKL Cares will use the dollars (funded by our Foundation, not customer bills), to establish a food pantry with a community garden. With outdoor agriculture and in the summer and hydroponics in the winter, Iosco County residents will have access to fresh food all year long. Help us celebrate the great work PKL Cares is doing in Iosco County with a comment below!

Summer is coming to an end, and our interns are packing up their desks and preparing to go back to school. From engineering to IT, these young people stepped up and helped our customers with their time and talents. We hope this isn’t goodbye but see you later! We’re always looking for fresh talent to serve our friends and neighbors in Michigan. Hats off to the interns of summer 2024. Thank you for showing our neighbors all the ways they can count on us!

Regardless of rivalries on the football field, when a neighbor is in need, our co-workers always answer the call. We’re putting that to the test today as we send 10 crews of lineworkers to Ohio. (The state, not the Gen-Alpha slang for weird). They’ll be restoring power in the Cleveland area after severe weather left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity. At the end of the day, we’re all Midwesterners doing what we can to help each other out. And no matter where you live or which team you root for, you can count on us.
