Updates

  • As the start of the school year approaches, Corderman & Company is partnering with the Tynan Elementary School in South Boston to support their efforts in collecting art supplies for the school’s Art Program.   Ida Vozzella, the Art Educator at Tynan, understands how fundamental art is to the development of her students: “An education inclusive of the visual arts raises an individual’s sense of identity and provides creative avenues for expression…Through art, we get a glimpse of how students view themselves, their community, and the world. Students take their ideas from inception to creation, giving them a sense of accomplishment and pride.”   You can use the following link to access the school’s Blick Wishlist: https://lnkd.in/d_CzZgvF   Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!

As a construction professional with Usher syndrome (a genetic condition affecting both hearing and vision), I’ve experienced firsthand how crucial accessibility is on job sites. As Disability Pride Month concludes today, I’m reflecting on our industry’s power to build a more inclusive world - literally. At Corderman & Company, Inc., we believe that creating accessible work environments isn’t just about compliance - it’s about prioritizing safety while empowering every team member to contribute fully. Small changes make BIG impacts. Here are 5 tips, based on my personal experiences, that can help make the A/E/C (architecture, engineering, construction) industry more accessible, inclusive, and safer for all: 1. Use clear, high-contrast signage with large fonts on sites. Check color contrast with sites like this one: https://lnkd.in/djJdXKrU 2. Ensure job sites are kept clean and that temporary pathways are level, durable, and obstacle-free. 3. Provide both written and verbal safety instructions. Corderman is proud to be a Leadership partner of the AGC MA CARE Construction Safety Program, providing all of our workers with a safety orientation that not only includes multi-modal guidance, but is also offered in several languages! 4. Enable closed captioning during virtual meetings. CC can be helpful for so many reasons, including language processing, noisy external environments, etc. Also, if you are hosting an industry webinar, please make sure that your webinar platform turns on closed captioning. I’ve even attended DE&I webinars that don’t allow closed captioning to be turned on 🤯 5. Ensure adequate lighting in all work areas and egress pathways to aid visibility. You never know what challenges someone might be facing and how even a few minor changes can allow someone to safely and confidently navigate their environment. Together, let’s remain committed to making safety, accessibility, and empathy a priority in every space we build! What accessibility tips would you add? Share your experiences or suggestions in the comments below! #DisabilityPrideMonth #Accessibility #AEC #ConstructionInclusion #UsherSyndrome
