What an exciting and motivating conference this was! A great opportunity to hear from and be inspired by those in other Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence and from those at African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities providing invaluable opportunities, guidance and insight. Our take-home messages: 1. We have to appreciate that some CoREs started from scratch and some benefit from established histories of collaboration. It would be helpful to develop support models that keep this difference in mind. 2. For us as CoRE-GHA, team building was a necessary first step so that we now move into fundraising together to do things we wouldn't have been able to do alone. 3. We must strive to secure resources to ensure that all partners have a chance to fully participate. This shall require the development of creative strategies for resource sharing. This is essential to maintain equity in what we do and how we operate. 4. CoRE-GHA has obvious ties to several Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence, and shall actively develop concrete partnerships with CoRE-AID and CoRE-NCD. 5. Dedicated administrative personnel is essential to make the best use of and to orchestrate the complex timelines and formats of EU funding. These colleagues shall become pivotal to the competitiveness of the CoREs. 6. Last but not least, this was the right time to bring us together and should become a regular to keep up momentum and share experiences and practices. Thank you again to Stellenbosch University and all who made this event possible!
