We had a blast at the South KC Block Party this weekend! Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to support Cornerstones of Care, including Mayor Quinton Lucas! Let’s get to know Christine and Robert Leyva, our 2024 Spirit Award recipients. This dynamic duo has given so much to Cornerstones of Care and now it’s our turn to celebrate them! ✨ It all started back in 2013 when the Leyvas moved to Kansas City and hosted their first “Fiesta de Leyva,” a colorful Cinco de Mayo block party filled with food, music, and games. As the event grew, so did their generosity! By 2024, they donated over $4,000 and in-kind items to Cornerstones of Care. ✨ Each fall, they host a winter coat drive and sign up to buy gifts for kids in foster care through the Sponsor-A-Youth program. Christine even helps buy and transport gifts for others! ✨ The Leyvas are passionate about raising awareness about foster care and adoption, especially supporting youth transitioning out of the system. Having fostered and adopted their youngest son, their dedication to making a difference is truly inspiring. Let’s take a moment to share some love for one of our 2024 Spirit Award recipients, the Kansas City Young Matrons! The 108-year-old nonprofit has over 300 members of all ages, each of whom dedicates their time, talents, and resources to local organizations or “affiliates,” many of which focus on helping women and children. KCYM’s partnership with Cornerstones of Care officially began in 1987, and our work in the community has been blessed by their dedication and commitment to our cause ever since. ✨ In September, the KCYM hosted a fall picnic for the Gillis Campus Day Treatment School. Students and their families enjoyed corn hole, crafts, an egg run, and Culver’s custard! With just under a month until the 42nd annual Spirit Gala, we are excited to announce this year’s Spirit Award recipients! 💫 Christine and Robert Leyva Since moving to Kansas City in 2013, the Leyvas have made community service a priority, turning their annual “Fiesta de Leyva” into a charity event benefiting Cornerstones of Care. Their passion for supporting foster care started before their move, including fostering and adopting their youngest son in 2010. In addition to organizing fundraisers and providing in-kind donations, Christine serves on the Cornerstones of Care Foundation Board and events council. 💫 Kansas City Young Matrons With a rich history spanning over 100 years, Kansas City Young Matrons has partnered with Cornerstones of Care since 1987, providing financial support and hands-on volunteer efforts. One of their cherished traditions is hosting the annual holiday event for students at the Gillis Campus Day Treatment School, where members bake cookies and lead holiday crafts. They are longtime volunteers for the Thyme for Kids Plant Sale and are quick to organize a fall picnic for students or a collection effort when needed. Both recipients are truly deserving of the Spirit Award, playing a vital role in bringing our mission to life within the communities we serve.
