Did you know? Youth placed in kinship care often experience better academic, behavioral, and mental health outcomes than those placed in traditional foster care. They also report a stronger sense of belonging and connection. As we wrap up National Kinship Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight Tina and Jerrett, an incredible kinship couple who opened their hearts and home to three young relatives in need of a safe place to stay — a decision that changed everything for them in less than 12 hours. The couple had already raised three now-adult children and downsized their home, settling into a slower pace of life, but they didn’t hesitate to make room. Now, like many kinship families, they’re navigating the complexities of raising a family member’s children, while balancing the possibilities of reunification and adoption. “My hope is that we give these kids a safe place to be and that if they ever needed to come back, they know the door is open,” said Tina. Kinship care can make a tangible difference in the lives of children experiencing abuse, neglect, or other forms of hardship at home. This blog tells the remarkable story of Colby Landwehr, an electrical engineer at Burns & McDonnell who turned a challenging upbringing in foster care into a successful career. Throughout his school years, the Cornerstones of Care YES program provided instrumental support, helping Colby navigate college, access financial aid, and find transportation. But more than that, the YES program offered a unique holistic approach to help Colby adjust to life after foster care and increase his chances of success.  “A lot of these kids, myself included, have a hard time adjusting to life as an individual post-care,” said Colby. The program helped with everything from setting up appointments to cooking, cleaning, and managing money. “The goal was to address all aspects of life because a lot of things can stand in the way of being successful in your vocation and education,” said Colby. Discover how Colby’s resilience and passion for giving back inspire his work and his efforts to support foster youth through community service: https://lnkd.in/gFpvNa8k. #AllInCARE

“Everything happens so fast in kinship care.” This #NationalKinshipAwarenessMonth, we’re shining a light on the courageous, raw story of one of our own, Alicia Dentler, Clinical Utilization Specialist, who unexpectedly became a kinship caregiver in 2012. Just a year later, she and her husband made it official through adoption. From the initial overwhelm and challenges of navigating the child welfare system to finding a community of support, Alicia shares an unfiltered look at one kinship caregiver’s experience and how she used that experience to support other foster parents on their journey. If you’re a temporary caregiver to a niece, nephew, grandchild, student, or another child in your life, we encourage you to spend some time with this guest blog and to sign up for the free Kinship PATH training starting later this month. Co-facilitated by Alicia, the course is available to any kinship parent in Kansas seeking peer connection and support navigating the child welfare system. https://bit.ly/3MGcASM #AllInCARE
