We are enthusiastic about driving this work forward to better assess capital #additionality and #impact related to catalytic capital for agri-SMEs. When catalytic capital providers need to decide how to allocate their limited resources, many questions remain about the best way to optimize capital to most positively impact agricultural SMEs and the rural communities they serve. These efforts aim to enhance collaboration between stakeholders and inform decision making for the strategic, efficient, and effective allocation of concessionary capital. #catalyticcapital #agriSMEs #ASLC

At the beginning of this month, the Council on Smallholder Agricultural Finance (CSAF) gathered 65 stakeholders from 40+ institutions to build connections and openly discuss challenges and risks of the agricultural SME finance sector. It was energizing to bring this group together, sparking productive group dialogues with an objective to foster collaboration around solutions and pathways forward. Our new 2024 State of the Sector Report reviews 2023 lending activity across 19 financial institutions, totaling $697 million to over 675 businesses across 55 countries. The report analyzes the risks & challenges #agriSMEs face today, and how agricultural lenders are responding. Four key trends from 2023: 1️⃣ Lending volume decreased, though the number of borrowers grew slightly – particularly across clients borrowing less than $250K. 2️⃣ Risk increased, driven by borrower challenges amid overlapping crises. In particular, risk increased in South America and Africa and for loans greater than $1M.  3️⃣ Coffee activity saw its steepest drop in the past decade. Driven by a volatile market and significant challenges in Peru, coffee disbursements dropped by $86M. 4️⃣ Lenders have increased technical assistance to help borrowers mitigate risk – investing in clients through increased business development services, especially to increase management capacity and build climate resilience. They are pillars of local economies creating market linkages and job opportunities, and play a pivotal role in reaching our collective #climate goals by facilitating inputs and promoting climate resilient activities with farmers. However, financing the #agricultural #SME sector often is associated with heightened risks and high transaction costs. As impact investors, we choose to navigate these barriers and support agri-SME strengthening and growth in exchange for the #social and environmental #impact they create. As the sector evolves, we continue to call on donors to share in that risk and to strengthen SMEs’ management and operational capacity to navigate market, climate, supply chain, and other crises. #MissingMiddle
