KINGS COUNTY HOSTS Stanford University STUDENTS AND STAFF: Lemoore Solar Farm Field Trip On Friday, October 18th, students and staff from Stanford University’s Explore Energy Seminar, the Understand Energy class, residents from the Explore Energy theme house and staff from the Office of Sustainability visited a Lemoore solar farm called Slate for a firsthand tour of the University’s source of purchased clean energy. Representatives from Kings County, including Kings County Supervisor Joe Neves (District 1), and Noelle Tomlinson, Planner II, and project partners MN8 Energy and Canadian Solar were on site to welcome the students. “We are proud to be the home of Stanford University’s innovative solar project, one of the earliest with large-scale energy storage included, and we appreciate the opportunity to connect with students when they visit,” said Supervisor Neves. “Sustainable Stanford curates the campus as a Living Laboratory for sustainability, and Kings County is pleased to participate in education about clean energy development. On these field trips, students learn firsthand about the solar panels, battery storage, and the permitting process.” The Slate project includes Stanford Solar Generation Station #2, a 420-acre expanse of solar panels, inverters, and batteries that compose the University’s primary source of purchased clean energy. The 63-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant serves as the final component in the Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI), a complete redesign and transition of the University’s energy system from a 100 percent fossil fuel-based combined heat and power plant to grid-sourced electricity and a more efficient electric heat recovery system. Providing clean energy to the California grid offsets the local energy consumption and relative carbon emissions from the Stanford campus on an annual basis. MN8 Energy is the owner and asset manager of the Stanford Solar Generation Station #2, and Canadian Solar is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring and preventative maintenance. #KingsCounty #KingsCountyCA #StanfordUniversity #Stanford #Solar #SolarPower
