  • Faces of D47: “I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, and my family still lives in the same house where I grew up. I went to Ball State in Indiana and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I knew I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was in second grade. I would come home from school, grab my stuffed animals, and prop them up as if they were my students. I always loved watching the teachers teach; it resonated with me, and eventually, I thought I’d love to be the teacher one day instead of the student.” “After I graduated, I subbed in Milwaukee and then was a paraprofessional at Canterbury. I knew I wanted to end up in Crystal Lake since it reminded me of my hometown, so I looked for a full-time position, and it brought me to Husmann. I’ve been here for 28 years teaching either second or third grade.” “I love third grade because they’re independent enough to venture out but still need your support to guide them into being readers and writers. My goal is to make an impression in all aspects of their lives. I love to teach, but I also like to do things outside of the classroom so the students can see me in that setting, like dining for dollars or playing kickball.” “I look forward to greeting the students at the door every morning, and my favorite part of our day is our ‘classroom book a day,’ where they enjoy a snack while I read a picture book to them. I ask them how the book made them feel and we discuss other aspects of the book. We read a lot of diverse books so everyone can see themselves within a book and make connections. It’s the most powerful 10 minutes of our day.” “Outside of work, I love to paddleboard with friends and golf with my husband. All three of my sons are engaged, which means these next few years are going to be packed with weddings, and I’m so excited.” “Husmann is my second family. They have seen me through good and bad times. I’ve made lifelong friends with not only staff members but the families that have come through here. It’s amazing, especially for someone like me who doesn’t have extended family in the area; my work community is my family.” -Terri Olson, 3rd Grade Teacher, Husmann #FacesofD47
