On my way to #DOP24. Have my Oscars with me, ready to ask the question: with only 10 seconds to answer, who would you thank if you won an Oscar for your career? The reason to this question is to understand a person’s social networks and how important they are to career success. To answer my own question, I have to say 4 amazing and inspirational women: Sue Evershed Steph Thompson Lesley Smith Kate Smyth These women believed in me at various stages of my career. What is an ‘Expert by Experience?’ It is an individual who has lived experience, and in my case, lives with a disability. It is a person who has first-hand knowledge to contribute to discussions, policies and practices related to disability issues. An expert offers valuable insights based on their personal experiences, helping to shape more effective, empathetic and inclusive approaches and services. Their expertise is not derived from academic study or professional training alone, but from practical day-to-day challenges and realities of living with a disability. This perspective is crucial for developing more accurate and responsive services and ensures that the voices of those directly affected by disability are heard.
