Chicago's #water #innovation hub. Growing the #BlueEconomy, accelerating innovation, solving pressing water challenges.
About us
Current is a leading water innovation hub based in Chicago, dedicated to fostering an inclusive, circular blue economy. Our mission is to drive water innovation and address critical water challenges caused by climate change and pollution. Since our founding in 2016, we have collaborated with corporations, universities, nonprofits, utilities, and governments to create and implement solutions that tackle the water crisis while promoting economic growth and opportunities for all. In January 2024, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Current up to $160 million over 10 years to establish, develop, and grow the Great Lakes Water Innovation Engine, known as Great Lakes ReNEW. This six-state coalition aims to transform waste into wealth in the Great Lakes Region by commercializing new technologies that can extract valuable minerals and remove toxic forever chemicals from wastewater. Our mission is centered on three key areas: Use-Inspired R&D, Workforce Development, and Translating Innovations to Practice. At Current, we are dedicated to supporting the communities and people in our region most affected by economic and environmental injustice. In a world facing increasing water and resource scarcity, we believe that “waste” has no place.

Wrapping this week reflecting on a transformational trip to build community with cross-sector water leaders at The Aspen Institute Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment Water Forum. The chance to step back and deeply reflect on the linked challenges of #decarbonization and #watersecurity in a place that so vividly reminds me why I do this work - love for people and planet - was a profound privilege and a much-needed opportunity to get centered, grounded, and recharged. Grateful to Martin Doyle and Newsha Ajami, PhD for facilitating productive conversations, Greg Gershuny, Kate Jaffee, Beatrijs Kuijpers and the Aspen team for being such gracious hosts, and event sponsors The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, Xylem, Veolia, The Freshwater Trust, Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience, The Water Research Foundation (WRF), Esri, ByWater Institute at Tulane University,Mighty Arrow Family Foundation, and Raftelis for making it all possible. Most of all, I'm grateful for my tremendously talented and capable team of leaders at Current, who kept us flowing beautifully - even hosting a visit from the White House! - while I focused my attention on the new ideas and relationships that will power our work forward. #teamwork. 📸: Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, White River National Forest

Earlier this week, we were honored to host Heather Boushey, Member of the Council of Economic Advisers, The White House & Chief Economist for the Investing in America Cabinet, during her visit to Chicago. Alongside members of our #GreatLakesReNEW coalition, Heather learned about our initiative and the transformative impact of climate investments like the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Regional Innovation Engines program. Current’s Strategy Director, Kalindi Parikh, and Technical Program Director, Melissa Pierce, PhD, showcased how these investments are driving innovation and economic development in our region. Current Board Member Nadya Mason, Professor, Dean, and Interim VP for Science, Innovation, and Partnerships at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, also led a tour of Professor Chong Liu’s lab, where two Ph.D. candidates shared their cutting-edge research on #resourcerecovery, #selectiveseparation, and #criticalminerals membrane technologies. We’re so excited to continue sizing up this emerging market opportunity and advancing resource recovery technologies from lab to market. Through partnerships with Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, Polsky Center at the University of Chicago, City Colleges of Chicago, and National Fund for Workforce Solutions, Great Lakes ReNEW is building new industries, technologies, and jobs—positioning the Great Lakes region as a leader in water innovation and the circular, inclusive blue economy. 🔗 Learn more: greatlakesrenew.org Mark Potter Carrie Felton Ozge Guney-Altay, Ph.D. Jonathan Goodell #greatlakes #blueeconomy #waterinnovation #emergingmarkets #investinamerica #waterissues

This past Friday, we had the honor of hosting Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth at HIRE360 Partners’s new facility! Senator Duckworth received a briefing on Great Lakes ReNEW, our National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Regional Innovation Engine, which is driving economic growth in the Great Lakes region. Workforce development is a core focus of our Engine, so we were thrilled to hear from some of HIRE360’s training partners, contractors, and apprentices in the blue economy. With 50+ partners across the region, Great Lakes ReNEW will drive innovation to recover clean water, energy, and valuable materials from our wastewater while removing toxins like PFAS. We're also strengthening our region’s blue economy by training future workers and engaging youth in the industry. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like HIRE360 and congressional support from Senators Duckworth and Durbin, we’re making our waste-to-wealth mission a reality.
