🌊📢 Launched on World Reef Day: Rapidly Monitoring the Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event 📢🌊 On World Reef Day, MERMAID and partners Wildlife Conservation Society WWF Coral Reef Rescue Initiative announce the launch of a new training video designed to assist scientists in rapidly monitoring the world's Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event. 🗓️ June 1, 2024 – Climate change continues to trigger severe marine heatwaves, leading to widespread coral bleaching. Just last month, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) reported the onset of the fourth global coral bleaching event, urging immediate action to monitor and protect our coral reefs. To address this urgent need, MERMAID, in collaboration with the Coral Reef Rescue Initiative, WCS, and WWF, has developed a training video for researchers. This video introduces a rapid assessment method for underwater coral reef monitoring and real-time bleaching events, guiding communities, researchers, and scientists in efficiently tracking coral health and uploading data to the open-source platform MERMAID. 📢 Dr. Emily Darling, WCS Director of Coral Reef Conservation and Co-Founder of MERMAID, emphasizes, “Over half of the world’s coral reefs experienced extreme heat stress this past year. To understand which reefs have bleached, survived, or recovered, underwater monitoring is crucial. By adopting standardized methods like MERMAID’s Rapid Assessment protocol, scientists can swiftly measure climate change impacts on coral reef biodiversity and integrity. We hope this training video accelerates the identification of climate-resilient reefs for conservation.” 📢 Carol Phua, Coral Reef Rescue Initiative Lead, adds, “Knowledge is power in the fight to protect coral reefs. This Rapid Bleaching Assessment video equips coral reef communities, researchers, and scientists with the tools to track bleaching events and contribute data, helping us identify resilient reefs that can aid in future reef restoration efforts.” 🌐 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/grt9QgNK #WorldReefDay #CoralBleaching #ClimateChange #CoralReefs Haley Williams Stacy Jupiter Alexandra Kler Lago Iain Caldwell Kim Fisher John Barabino Amkieltiela . Will open-source data and AI help the world's oceans survive a record-breaking year of heat? As climate change has worsened, coral reef bleaching has devastated millions of reef areas globally. MERMAID, an initiative led by the Wildlife Conservation Society, is facing this challenge head-on by providing scientists and stakeholders with a cutting-edge open-source web application for collecting and managing coral reef ecosystem data in real-time through Postgres and AI. Read the new article in Forbes to learn how this pioneering effort is underway right now in the heart of the Philippines, with the goal of protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, the Coral Triangle. At EDB, we’re proud to stand behind MERMAID as a sponsor and to support the vital work it does in unlocking life-saving conservation efforts. This is more than just technology—it’s about safeguarding the ecosystems that sustain us all. Our MERMAID Customer Success Manager Alexandra Kler Lago is at the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) meetings in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 this week sharing how MERMAID is a tool that helps scientists contribute to the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network -- and keep a look out for new features coming soon! 📸 🐠 🌊
WCS MERMAID | Coral Reef Monitoring, Capacity Building and Conservation Management | Working to Protecting Our Climate Resilient Reefs
At the 38th International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) General Meeting, I had the opportunity to represent the Wildlife Conservation Society and MERMAID highlighting our ongoing support for the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) and the critical role of standardized coral reef monitoring and data technologies. During my presentation, I emphasized how MERMAID provides an innovative data solution for monitoring and reporting coral reef health, which can significantly contribute to global efforts. I also shared an exciting update on the upcoming integration of a machine learning model for coral reef image classification into the MERMAID platform. This new feature, developed in partnership with CoralNet will greatly enhance the processing of coral reef images and break adoption barriers of such techonologies. Stay tuned for beta testing and the official release—this AI-driven advancement will be a powerful tool for coral reef monitoring and conservation! ⚡️🪸 Huge appreciation for the amazing minds behind this work Emily Darling Kim Fisher Iain Caldwell Amkieltiela John Barabino Diwigdi Valiente

🌊🐠 How can data help save coral reefs? Check out this recent Forbes article on how MERMAID is empowering scientists in the Tawi-Tawi islands, in the far south of the Philippines to monitor and protect climate-resilient coral reefs. "MERMAID automates calculations such as coral cover and fish biomass, saving time and minimizing human error, making it an invaluable asset for effective coral reef monitoring and conservation. Its offline functionality is particularly useful in remote areas like Tawi-Tawi, where internet access is limited." - Professor Richard Nami Muallil, Mindanao State University. By harnessing the field-ready power of simple web forms, clean data, and visual reports, MERMAID is proud to support partners working to conserve one of the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems, critical for the livelihoods of millions of people in the Coral Triangle and around the world. 🌍 #CoralReefConservation #AIforGood #OceanHealth #MERMAID #ClimateResilience https://lnkd.in/gGNhttB9 Wildlife Conservation Society Bloomberg Philanthropies Trafigura Foundation Richard Muallil Forbes Kate Lim Emily Small Melissa Wright Tatum June Pollard Michael Gale EDB Stacy Jupiter
