  • Employee Spotlight - Between the Lines At Davey, our teams are synonymous with hard hats and hard work! But each of our team members have their own unique life story, career journey, and Davey tale. You may see our fleet out driving or our people out walking the utility lines…so join us each month to get to know our people working Between the Lines. Feature: Phil Moser What’s your Davey + Life story? "I was a patrol officer for 12 years in the Philadelphia area, eventually becoming a forensic motor vehicle crash reconstructionist. For years I was on call to go to the really bad crashes involving fatalities - so when I say that I hate crashes, I really mean it.  A fatality not only ruins an individual, it ruins a whole family. After leaving the police department I went to work for a training company. I met Bob Mossing many years ago when I trained at a company that he worked for. We stayed in contact, eventually starting the Fleet Safety Geeks podcast. When Bob came on board with Davey Resource Group, Inc. as #Fleet Manager, he recruited me to join as Manager of Fleet Training, which is a new position created as a result of our commitment to maintaining the highest level of #safety. Our program involves two hours of classroom training and two hours of behind the wheel training. I use 46 traffic cones and we go through an avoidance course and a skills course. We are getting a lot of positive feedback and because the safety culture of the company supports the initiative so strongly, I really feel that we’re making a difference. Instead of sitting behind a desk reacting to crashes that have already happened we’re working to prevent the crashes from happening at all. My goal is to help our drivers know that they need to go home safely everyday - it’s the most important thing. Another aspect of the training is to understand that being a safe driver is more than just doing the standard safe driver practices. This includes making good decisions in split seconds when reacting to the other drivers and forces outside of your control. We use a program I created called The Seven Life Saving Skills. One example is See and Be Seen by doing things like scanning 360 and turning your lights on to engage the tail lights which don’t come on using the daytime running lights. We also address the use of driver assistance systems such as backup cameras which are not to replace your good and safe habits, but to enhance them. Our training is designed to help employees understand the consequences of bad decisions. Driving is the top cause of death in the workplace. We want to prevent that. In my personal life, I love spending time with my wonderful wife of 41 years, our two children, and grandchildren. Grandchildren are the best. I’m a huge Phillies fan and take in as many games as I can. They’re doing well right now so that makes me happy."

Feature: Mary Davis Haneline What’s your Davey + Life Story? Before I came to Davey Resource Group, Inc. I worked at a nonprofit supporting adults with developmental disabilities. I started working with this population at 18 and developed a great passion for this work. After completing my degree at Cleveland State University, I was eager for a new challenge and was drawn to recruiting. I am thankful that my journey led me to Davey where we value and invest in our employees. I have so much pride in this team because we care about the employees that we bring on board. We want everyone to get home safely at the end of the day. From a recruiting perspective, when we can transparently share this company's values with prospective employees, it feels great to believe in what we offer. As I've grown with the company I recognize how forward-thinking the team is. In our industry it's critical to be constantly evaluating our client's needs to support them today and project for the future. We’re analyzing industry trends and predicting service line demands. Staying proactive when we go after opportunities ensures stability for the employees we hire and develop. I always share with candidates that we want our newest employees to have the same opportunities that our current leadership had - and the way to do that is through a variety of work. I want candidates to know that #Davey offers careers; not just the job they applied for. It’s rewarding to see new hires with positive attitudes take on responsibilities and explore various career paths. I am focused on developing structure in anticipation of the growth ahead. My team works closely with managers to understand the complexities of projects and spend time in the field to experience the roles and meet those needs more creatively. This recruiting team believes in supporting each other to be successful, cheering each other on, and sharing our hiring challenges. We strive to educate our candidates about the importance of what we do…maintaining safe #infrastructure, minimizing outages, and keeping the country connected. It helps to humanize the work by understanding the purpose behind it. We’re making a difference in communities while striving to have a greener, safer future. Our employees and organization should be proud of that. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends - hiking, adventuring outdoors, and traveling. My husband and I just came back from Ireland, and are preparing for some upcoming tent camping with our dog, Ravioli. I also love reading, painting, and needlework/knitting when I am inside!

Employee Spotlight - Between the Lines At Davey, our teams are synonymous with hard hats and hard work! But each of our team members have their own unique life story, career journey, and Davey tale. You may see our fleet out driving or our people out walking the utility lines…so join us each month to get to know our people working Between the Lines. Feature: Matthew Punch What’s your Davey + Life story? Looking back, I realize I had a wonderful childhood with great parents and grandparents. They instilled in me faith, a sense of community, and a love of the outdoors. They included me in their activities and supported me in mine. I was a baseball pitcher and probably would have never picked up a golf club if my catcher hadn’t been late…a lot…for warm-ups. He admitted to taking golf lessons. So, I decided to give golf a try and I was hooked. My first job was at a course in Charlotte at 14, picking up golf balls while learning how to hit draws and fades down rows of pine trees. Eventually I attended Methodist University. Our team raised two national championships in division 3 which was pretty awesome. After college, I worked in finance and pursued masters classes. When my parents developed health issues we partnered with a company to transform part of their farm in Hickory, North Carolina into a photovoltaic (solar) system. During the initial civil planning, I researched everything I could about the industry. I eventually left finance to work for that renewable company. One of the most unique factors of renewables is #innovation. To share an example: there is a brush that was designed to clean the Luxor Hotel & Casino. The brush has a rotating head that uses pressure to turn and clean the 39 degree slope with 4 gallons of water per minute, cleaning the hotel exterior. In 2018, our team thought there was a pathway to adapt that brush for cleaning solar panels. Working with the brush company we successfully rolled out a working proof of concept. After the roll-out, renewable modules are refurbished (every 3-5 years). Current mechanical brushes can clean 10x our initial numbers. That’s how quickly innovation happens in renewables. I became familiar with #Davey while bidding for renewable vegetation management contracts. The professionalism I saw in #DRG employees made an impression. One focus of our renewable group is to provide #mitigation services to companies to keep these systems working as productively and as long as their projects require, 25-30 years. The expertise available at Davey to collaborate on #renewable projects has made my first year here amazing.  I still play golf as much as I can, when not chasing our six year old daughter who currently loves anything with wheels. My wonderful wife works at Charlotte Animal Referral and Emergency specializing in high risk cases. When she’s not saving animals, she’s bringing the “fur-babies” home. In my spare time I enjoy restoring classic Broncos (66-77), hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Feature: Brett Hansel What’s your Davey + Life story? I’m a native Nebraskan so I’m no stranger to cold, harsh, winds and storms. I believe this upbringing better prepared me for the work of maintaining oil fields in North Dakota. After experiencing the occasional -80 degree wind chill, life took me to Florida where I went to work for a #utility maintenance company. The sunshine and warmth were rewarding. I began as a #crew member where I learned that hard work and #grit have a way of paying you back. I was made a foreman and then, after three years, a supervisor. It was at this point that I started a family and focused less on traveling around the country for work and more on construction, safety, and remodeling. I really enjoyed being able to work with my hands in this way and still try to do this when the opportunity arises. I went back into utility infrastructure maintenance in order to move my family to Texas and, after working for a couple of companies, I began with Davey Resource Group in 2023. Because of my previous experience I was brought in to focus on pole restoration across multiple projects. Soon after, the decision was made to combine all restoration projects under one umbrella and I became the owner of that profit center. I now cover all of the restoration contracts which enables greater efficiency. My team and I are always looking for ways to improve our services for the benefit of the customer. I lead my team to know that, if you try your best, there are plenty of opportunities for your career to have an upward trajectory. I also believe it's important to communicate that this field has stable job security. Personally, I don’t look for perfect employees. Everyone is different and brings different strengths to the table. I try to get to know and understand the members of my team, matching my management style to them and leading in a way that empowers each person to use those strengths for the betterment of the team and our customers. Outside of work I spend my time with my blended family that includes my wife Lacy, my kids, and Lacy’s kids. I’m an avid golfer, hunter, and gun designer. I personalize guns by adding unique designs, mostly with stencils, by using an airbrush with colored epoxy coatings. I’ve done quite a few of them for friends and family. All in all, life has a way of creating stepping stones towards success for those that persevere and stick with what their gifts are. I feel blessed to be with the Davey family and look forward with hopeful anticipation about what the future brings for this company. #Davey #DRG #UAM
