  • During Employee Ownership Month, we're spotlighting a few of Davey's President's Council members and sharing their "Why" for employee-ownership. For Kyle Celmer, his buy-in for employee-ownership started in his childhood. Kyle jokingly said, "I changed my blood color early in life to green." His father began working for Davey in 1969. Kyle saw what employee-ownership did for his father and his family growing up. Kyle believes employee-ownership comes with a sense of responsibility. "What ownership does for you is that it shows you that you are responsible for the company's success regardless of your position," he said. "I think it just instills that responsibility of ownership that comes from doing things right and going back to the original Davey adage of, 'Do it right or not at all.'" Kyle said he sees employee-ownership's impacts on Davey's culture through the extra care employees take in their work. "It's the extra look back at the driveway and thinking 'Did I blow everything off?' Taking 20 minutes to wash your truck today, so it looks good the next day," he said. "It puts a next-level care inside you. I think that’s what I’ve seen with my direct reports and my fellow peers. That pride in ownership is there." Kyle is the operations manager, Davey Business Development Team.

  • Meet Anthony "Tony" Lopez Gazo. Tony is a general foreman, Eastern Utility services, and a champion for the Hispanic & Latino(a) Employee Affinity Group (EAG). For Tony, Hispanic Heritage Month is a good time to remember where you came from. "We decided to come here from another country to have a better life or experience," he said. "We still have our roots and we need to remember the steps we took along the way." Tony is from Cuba and his traditions center around spending time with family and friends. They play dominoes together, host barbecues and dance. Tony is proud to be a champion of the Hispanic & Latino(a) EAG because it is a place to share difficulties and work together to find solutions, improve knowledge and create better experiences. "I’m proud to be working here at Davey and I like being part of an initiative to help every Hispanic or Latino(a) improve and open new frontiers. There is a course for only Hispanic people and I love that," he said. "I started working three years ago and feel the company wants to grow everyone and help them feel at home here."

  • Cheer on the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight as they take on the New York Rangers for their home opener. Davey is proud to partner with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the "Score for the Trees" program. The "Score for the Trees" program plants one tree in Pittsburgh for every home goal scored. Davey is also a sustainability partner with the Penguins through its "Penguins Pledge" sustainability initiative. Thank you to the Pittsburgh Penguins for scoring 131 goals at home during the 2023-24 regular season. These trees will provide TREEmendous benefits to the communities where they're planted. We are excited to see how many trees will be planted during the 2024-25 regular season. More 🥅's = more 🌳's for Pittsburgh! #ScorefortheTrees #LetsGoPens

  • The safety of Davey employees is of paramount importance at all times, and we are focusing on the 700+ crewmembers working on the storms in the Southeast right now. To keep our teammates safe, we will be working with local authorities to ensure that our employees are in secure locations when the storm hits. Storm cleanup will not begin until after the storm has subsided and our crews can begin helping restore the power in a safe manner.

  • The sugar maple, Acer saccharum, boasts lively orange, red and yellow leaves in the fall, making it an immensely popular tree. This particular sugar maple stands proudly at Davey’s SEED (Science, Employee Education and Development) Campus in Kent, Ohio. This tree recently received a new title as the "Employee Ownership 45th Anniversary Tree." Employees voted to choose a tree on the new SEED Campus to receive this commemoration. Congratulations to all the employees who voted for this autumnal beauty. Davey's SEED Campus is being designed to serve Davey’s growing research initiatives and employee education programs to help Davey arborists hone their skills. Davey's arborist skills trainers have used this sugar maple for climbing trainings and workshops. More information on Davey's SEED Campus can be found at Davey.com/SEED. #EOM2024 #EmployeeOwnershipMonth #EmployeeOwned #EmployeeOwnership

  • Meet Isabella Lemus. She's a consulting utility forester, Davey Resource Group, Utility Vegetation Management, and a champion for the Hispanic & Latino(a) Employee Affinity Group (EAG). For Isabella, celebrating her heritage is something she does daily. Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration and an exciting way to raise awareness about Hispanic cultures, she said. Isabella has family living in Mexico City and tries to see them yearly. Food is at the heart of Isabella's traditions with her family. One tradition is making tamales every year at Christmas. For Hispanic Heritage Month, her aunt did traditional crafting with corn husks and made a wreath for the door. Isabella is glad she can be part of creating a safe space for other Hispanics to gather and discuss their common goals through the EAG. "It's being a resource to other people trying to move forward in their careers and supporting my co-workers in the company," she said. "It has been inspiring to have this community created. When you are a minority on your team, you sometimes feel like the odd one out. But by collectively gathering, we are trying to reduce that feeling." Pictured are Isabella and Alice Lalone, recruiter, at a recruiting event called "Trees and Tacos" hosted by the Chicago Region Trees Initiative.
