The chaos and displacement caused by natural disasters like Hurricane Beryl, can worsen existing abuse and make it harder for survivors to find safety. Survivors face increased isolation, limited access to resources and disrupted communication. DayaHouston, along with AANHPI advocates from AAPIAgainstGV, was invited to the The White House to participate in a powerful roundtable discussion and share perspectives about the types of gun violence we see in our communities and the support needed. Daya shared statistics on how South Asian DV clients are affected by gun violence both in Houston and across the country. Collectively, we asked the Administration for concrete steps to address issues around gun violence + AANHPI community with both a culturally competent lens, as well as in the diverse languages of the communities we represent. The White Office of Gun Violence Prevention pledged their support and urged us to continue working in collaboration with their Office. Daya is proud to be part of these critical conversations and advocate on behalf of our clients and their families at some of the highest levels in our nation's government.

Earlier this month, Swati Narayan of Daya Houston spoke with Senator Ted Cruz about the need for basic background checks on all gun sales in Texas. A staggering 35% of domestic violence fatalities in Texas in 2023 were committed by perpetrators prohibited from owning firearms. Across the U.S., 55% of South Asian domestic violence deaths involved firearms. Alarmingly, suicide by firearm is the leading cause of death among AAPI youth. Basic background checks on all gun sales could help prevent such senseless tragedies. (Background: In April 2024, the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms) introduced the "Engaged in the Business Rule" which defined a firearm seller as someone who earns a profit from the purchase and resale of firearms. The rule requires such sellers to obtain a federal firearms license and conduct background checks on purchasers, similar to the requirements for licensed gun dealers.) It reminds us that our oppressions are interlinked across race, caste, religion, gender and sexuality.
