About us

DC Prep is a network of public charter schools serving over 2,100 PK3 through 8th grade students across six campuses in Wards 5, 7, and 8. We’re proud of being the highest-performing public charter network serving majority at-risk students in Washington, DC – our students deserve our best! That pushes us to reflect on questions such as how we can facilitate our students’ academic, social and emotional development, how we can support our team members’ professional growth and personal ability to do this work long-term, and how we can engage our students’ families as our own. While this work is hard, it’s worth it – we believe in the transformative power of education, the can-do-it-ness of our students and staff, and the joy that comes from engaging in meaningful work with people we care about and trust! DC Prep was founded in 2003 to help ALL students in our nation’s capital get the education they need – and deserve – to live up to their greatest potential. Every year around this time, we get to witness our mission being fulfilled as we find out where our Preppies and alumni are headed off to high school and college! Jesus D. will be attending the University of Vermont on a full scholarship! Jesus recalls his time at DC Prep fondly: “It was a very rigorous academic environment, which helped me establish a routine of studying and other habits to excel in high school,” he said. “Ms. Fuller, my 8th grade math teacher, really prepared me for hard high school math.” At the University of Vermont, Jesus plans to study wildlife biology and work in animal conservation after graduation. “A full ride to college means the opportunity to continue pursuing my goals,” he shared. “It opens a door to more opportunity, especially because it won’t create financial strain for my family.”

DC Prep was founded in 2003 to help ALL students in our nation’s capital get the education they need – and deserve – to live up to their greatest potential. Every year around this time, we get to witness our mission being fulfilled as we find out where our Preppies and alumni are headed off to high school and college! Winta B. will be attending Boston College in the fall! Winta chose Boston College because of her positive experience during Admitted Students Weekend – she felt a strong sense of community, which mirrored her DC Prep experience. She is planning to major in biochemistry and pursue a career as a pediatrician! Winta’s family chose DC Prep because they were looking for a school known for rigorous academics that would push their children to excel, as well as support with the high school placement process (Winta’s younger brother, Sened, graduated DC Prep in 2022!). After graduating from DC Prep, Winta went on to attend Sidwell Friends School. “My teachers at DC Prep pushed me to be my best academic self and get ready for the rigorous academic environment at Sidwell,” Winta shared. “Overall, my academic experience at DC Prep was a stepping stone for my success at Sidwell.” One of her favorite memories from DC Prep was when she won Preppie of the Month in 5th grade. “It was during a challenging time for me, when I was learning English,” Winta said. “It felt really good to be recognized, and it reinforced my desire to keep striving in all avenues.” Winta leveraged the resources of PrepNext during her college application process. “PrepNext is a big example of how DC Prep remains connected [to alumni],” she said. “I am really appreciative of [my counselor] Ms. Blakey. The support and level of care I’ve received from PrepNext can’t be found anywhere except PrepNext.”

DC Prep was founded in 2003 to help ALL students in our nation’s capital get the education they need – and deserve – to live up to their greatest potential. Every spring, we get to witness our mission being fulfilled as we find out where our Preppies and alumni are headed off to high school and college! Javada F. will be attending Carnegie Mellon in the fall. “I chose Carnegie Mellon for the academic rigor, their reputation for my intended major of Chemical Engineering, and the alumni network,” Javada told us. “My plan is to either get an advanced degree or do the 4+1 program and receive my master’s in 5 years. I am hoping to go into sustainability and/or medical research, which I’ve explored through an internship at Georgetown University doing research in the medical field.” Javada received a scholarship to attend Carnegie Mellon, for which he is “super grateful.” “I would not be going to school without it,” he said. “I’m thankful my parents don’t have to worry about financial strain.” Javada said that DC Prep prepared him for the academic rigor of high school (he attended Gonzaga College High School) and taught him the character values for success as a college student. “DC Prep fueled what I wanted to get out of school, and pointed me in the right direction for where I want to go in life,” Javada said. “DC Prep shaped my core values as a student. “I want to shout out Ms. Harbaugh for helping me a lot with preparing for high school,” he added. “And Ms. Jones helped me research high schools.” Ms. Harbaugh was a teacher at Benning Middle Campus (BMC) and is now the principal; Ms. Jones was a teacher and high school placement counselor at BMC and is now the principal of Anacostia Middle Campus! For those starting the college application process soon, Javada advised them to take advantage of PrepNext. “They provide a lot of information, [they have] availability to meet with students, and [they] ensure that students stay on top of applications and deadlines.”
