“It’s now possible for almost anyone to tap into knowledge to help them think through any problem that they’re dealing with in a way that was never possible before.” Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, addressed the topic of technology and innovation at the intersection of health care in a live conversation today at The University of Texas at Austin, the future home of The University of Texas Medical Center. “Zoom down into medicine. In medical schools of the past, the idea was you’re supposed to know everything,” he said. “Now, the practitioner has the opportunity to have tremendous amounts of help to inform their ability.” The talk was a wide-ranging exploration of the health applications of technology, from wearables to telemedicine, with a focus on centering emerging innovation on patient and provider needs, the imperative to engage expertise across disciplines, and workforce preparedness. All are concepts UT has embraced in its planning for UT Medical Center, which is anchored by Dell Med and emphasizes the value of campus expertise and resources in its strategic plan, Health Starts Here. Dell was joined by John Noseworthy, M.D., emeritus president and CEO of Mayo Clinic and the chairman of digital consortium Aegis Ventures, along with UT President Jay Hartzell, Ph.D., and Claudia Lucchinetti, M.D., UT’s senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of Dell Medical School. Noseworthy encouraged leaders on stage to embrace “less talking and more listening” in reorienting health care professionals for a digital-first future. “They will explore the boundaries of their creativity,” he said. “Just make sure they are rooted in the values [of where you want to go].” Learn more about the plan for UT Medical Center: https://bit.ly/3V6G7tt
