Recently, Dr. Aprille Ericsson, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology visited the Manufacturing Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “My visit to the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Manufacturing Institute was informative and inspiring,” said Ericsson. “Educating future generations is key to building an enduring advantage for our warfighters. The talent and expertise we need must be invested in and developed to ensure we have lasting foundations for research and development.” Partnership with the academic community is one part of the broad defense innovation ecosystem that is integral to advancing the Department’s 14 critical technologies. Spotlight on Innovation and Public Safety: Tackling Emerging Firearms Threats with Technology! On October 22, 2024, the DoD Joint Additive Manufacturing Working Group (JAMWG) joined the first meeting of the White House Task Force on Emerging Firearms Threats. JAMWG’s role is to assess the technical feasibility of designing 3D printers that block the functionality of software capable of producing machinegun conversion devices. This task force, led by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, includes collaboration from agencies like the Departments of Energy, State, Commerce, and Homeland Security.
