The Sphinx Competition, held every year in Detroit, MI, is a national competition offering young Black and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with and receive mentorship from established professional musicians. Finalists in the Senior Division have the opportunity to perform with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra and compete for nearly $100,000 in prizes, including the top Robert Frederick Smith Prize. Audience Choice Awards are an exciting highlight, as those in attendance cast their votes by text and select a winner in each division. Under the direction of Lina Gonzalez-Granados, the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra will also perform the world premiere of Daydreaming for Orchestra by composer Levi Taylor. What are you doing this weekend? The Great Lakes Regional Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition which will be held at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday, January 25, 1:00PM-3:30PM! Admission is open to the public and free! The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition is a national competition designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. Participants feature the winners of the Buffalo-Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Michigan Districts, and at least one winner from this round will move on to the semifinal national auditions in New York.

Open enrollment for our summer programs is just around the corner! You can sign up for “Create & Perform” and “Operetta Remix” starting Monday, January 20. Create & Perform A fun mini camp for kids ages 8-12 to explore their creative side and write, compose, and star in their production from July 7-18. Operetta Remix Aspiring artists aged 13-18 to learn from experienced opera and theatre professionals during our Operetta Remix day camp from July 24 to August 8. Favorite scenes and songs from operettas and musicals will help young artists develop their singing, acting, stage movement, healthy vocal technique, and audition practice.
