The three S's of microgrids: Simple, Scalable, Standardized Conventional microgrids are prohibitively complex, requiring hundreds (or more) hours of engineering and design to assemble many disparate components into a functional solution. This complexity has been a major technical and economic barrier to the deployment of microgrids in the commercial & industrial markets. To enable microgrids to flourish, we need to follow the three S's. Simple: Lower design complexity and a reduction in the number of components. Scalable: Modular, flexible architectures capable of growing into a customer's future energy needs. Standardized: Cookie-cutter designs to enable global deployments with minimal variation to drive the engineering and installation costs down. OCP Global Summit 2024 Takeaways: Higher Power + Higher Voltage to meet the demands of Artificial Intelligence OCP Global Summit brought together top companies across artificial intelligence, energy, computing, engineering, and much more to talk about one key question: "How are we going to meet the demands of AI?" Here are our top three takeaways from the conference: 1. AI will require us to rethink conventional datacenter architectures. The standard of 48V datacenter racks is quickly changing to accommodate the higher-power requirements of AI. Meta and Microsoft both announced a 400-V rack architecture, and we heard discussions about higher voltages, including 800 V and even medium voltage. 2. Datacenter buildout starts with power, and we'll need a combination of on-site generation, energy storage, and grid upgrades to get there. Nuclear, fuel cells, generators, solar, batteries, you name it. All options are on the table, and we'll likely need a combination of them all to meet power demands that are expected to double, triple, or more in a few short years. 3. The intersection of AI and energy is driving one of the biggest revolutions of our time. These two megatrends of artificial intelligence and the energy transition are inextricably connected and both promise to fundamentally reshape our society.
