Check out ELP Alum Charles Hua and the launch of PowerLines! This is super important work and the Energy Terminal team is excited to see where Charles and team take this new endeavor!
We're live! Today, PowerLines is announcing its launch as a national nonprofit organization focused on modernizing utility regulation to accelerate affordable, reliable, and clean energy for American energy consumers. In the U.S., 200 people oversee over $200 billion in utility spending each year. The individuals serving on these state public utilities commissions (PUCs) have the power to impact our energy bills, the quality of our utility service, and how utilities invest our money. Yet, despite the power these regulators hold, few people know who they are, what their jobs entail, or how to provide input on their decisions. Meanwhile, our energy regulatory system is aging faster than our infrastructure. The need for modernizing utility regulation is increasingly urgent to address mounting affordability and reliability challenges facing the power grid. Over 1 in 4 Americans are struggling to pay their energy bills. Electricity prices have increased 20% since the start of 2022. Weather-related power outages have doubled in the past decade. And these consequences disproportionately harm low-income communities and communities of color. We have an unprecedented opportunity to build an energy system that is cheaper, cleaner, and better. Community engagement with PUCs has recently yielded positive consumer outcomes in Louisiana, Colorado, and elsewhere. PowerLines will serve as a hub by bringing together diverse stakeholders to share resources, generate ideas, and implement solutions on a path forward to advancing consumer interests, community benefits, and economic development. It's time to put the public back in public utilities commissions. Join us at www.powerlines.org! #energy #power #public #affordable #reliable #clean #communities #utilities #consumers #energyconsumers #utilityregulation #pucs #equity #energyburden #energyjustice #energyaffordability #affordability #community #economicdevelopment
