Direction Home Akron Canton has been a leader in long-term care for over 40 years, serving thousands of individuals throughout Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne Counties. Direction Home Akron Canton, along with 11 other Area Agencies on Aging across the state of Ohio, was designated by the Older Americans Act which was designed to provide services to persons not adequately served by other public and private systems. Our focus is funding and advocacy surrounding programs and services that allow older adults and people with disabilities to remain independent and in the home of their choice. At Direction Home Akron Canton, we understand the importance of independence which is why we’ve made it our mission to ensure that you and your loved ones can stay happy, stay healthy and stay home. Each year we select a theme for our raffle campaign to engage our staff in raffle sales. This year, our theme is “America’s Next Top Senior” and our internal raffle skits have featured actors with “stories” of real-life experiences older adults in our region face as they make choices related to their care and wellness. Happy Halloween! Our Elder Rights Department is carrying on the fun over several days: Holly and Julie visited Nordonia High School on Monday to talk to different health classes about the Ombudsman role, ageism, positive aging and the importance of honoring personal preferences/resident rights. The students were very receptive and had excellent questions. We were grateful for this opportunity to reach out to our youth. On Tuesday, the department had Dementia Friends training provided by Barb White, Certified Dementia Friends Champion. Very impactful session. Our person-centered approach to care empowers you to age in place. Direction Home Akron Canton centers long-term care on the person – not the problem. We really get to know you and your loved ones, so that we can help you navigate your long-term care options with dignity and understanding. However, there is a huge gap in services for older adults that need our help but don’t qualify. Our Foundation believes everyone has the same right to quality care regardless of ability to pay.
