Accessibility Experience Designer at Best Buy | Disability Activist

I attended a panel on making your social media accessible and spoke afterward with Jennison Asuncion, Head of Accessibility for LinkedIn. I wanted to share what I learned about IDs of your images in posts. You may have noticed I always write an image description of my images in the body of my post. This is to provide a visual description for friends and colleagues that are Blind, low vision or have cognitive disabilities. I asked whether I should be writing these in the body of the text, or if it would be better to fill out the Alt-text fields that LinkedIn and Facebook provide. Jennison shared that it’s better to write in the body of your post, because some people, like those with low vision, may not be using a screen reader (where the alt text would be available) but could still benefit from a description of the image. I asked whether I should add a description in both places and he shared that it would be duplicate information so that wasn’t necessary. I wanted to share this and encourage everyone to add image descriptions to your posts. It will give your posts more reach and be inclusive. Disability:IN
