About us

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games. We believe games give us a way to have fun with our favorite people, whether listening to music together or grinding in competitive matches for diamond rank. Join us in our mission! We're kicking off Game Developers Conference 2025 week with an exciting announcement! Today we're launching Discord Social SDK 🚀, enabling developers of all sizes to tap into Discord’s social infrastructure and drive their game’s social and multiplayer experiences for all their players — with or without a Discord account — at no cost. “For game creators from indie to AAA, Discord is where you can connect with the world's largest and most engaged community of players to fuel the growth of your game before, during, and after launch. Game discovery and retention have never been so critical, and we're excited to help developers grow their games by reaching gamers where they are." – Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Co-Founder and CTO Early developers leveraging Discord Social SDK include: Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, 1047 Games, Scopely, Mainframe Industries, Elodie Games, Tencent Games, and more. Discord Social SDK is compatible with C++, both Unreal Engine and Unity, and supports Windows 11+ and macOS. Support for console and mobile is in the works and coming soon. 👀Check out these case studies of Theorycraft (https://lnkd.in/dYpRmxQ8) and Farm Merge Valley (https://lnkd.in/d2kzBftn) to see how Discord has become a launchpad where developers can cultivate thriving communities, connect with passionate players and watch their creations grow. And if you want to learn more about Discord Social SDK, read our blog (https://lnkd.in/d6WHtvF4) . Get out there and start playing 🎮! #LifeatDiscord #GDC2025

What happens when you pivot? For Discord, it meant transforming from a video game studio into the social platform we are today. But as Jason Citron shares in this conversation with Andrew Chen at a16z speedrun, that journey wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Some team members embraced the vision. Others… left (some even via Post-It Note 🫣). Pivoting can be messy, but sometimes, it’s the path to building something truly impactful. Check out Jason’s insights on navigating change, leadership, and making tough calls in this fantastic discussion. Huge thanks to Andrew for sharing this conversation! 📺 Watch the full video here: Andrew Chen’s post: https://lnkd.in/e2cNn-AE #Discord #Pivoting #StartupLessons #Leadership #a16zSpeedrun

What happens when you pivot? Well, you might have employees quit They might even quit via Post-It Note. (Ouch) This is what happened in the early days of Discord. Here we have the great Jason Citron sharing his wisdom on what it was like to pivot from a video game studio into the communications platform we now know as Discord. Some of his team hated the idea. Some quit, others had to be managed out. Amazing case study on what it means to pivot. tldr; it can get messy. Even when you are on the way to building something as important/impactful as Discord. This talk happened as part of a16z Speedrun! Fantastic discussion, and thank you for sharing Jason 😎

On Safer Internet Day, and every day, Discord is committed to making the internet as a whole a better, safer place. We’re proud to provide additional tools for our users to make informed choices about their online experiences, and to come together with others in the industry to invest in safety features. Today, we’re announcing that Discord is a founding partner of ROOST.tools, a new cross-industry non-profit foundation that addresses a critical gap in child safety and digital safety by providing free, open-source safety tools to organizations of all sizes. This will alleviate the need for organizations to reinvent the wheel in building tools that already exist, empowering them to focus on growing their platforms or services while also protecting their online users. Other founding partners include OpenAI, Google, Roblox, Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP, Knight Foundation, AI Collaborative, The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and Project Liberty. Read more about the foundation here: https://lnkd.in/e5StcA5p. Additionally, our new safety tool, Ignore, is launching globally, giving our users an additional option in their toolbox to manage their social boundaries in a gentler way. This is why we’re so dedicated to making Discord the best place to hang out before, during and after gaming. ♥️ “In the early days of the pandemic, Josh Kramer and his wife set up a Discord server to stay in touch with their friends…Now, more than four years later, it's become ‘essential’ for the extended friend group, says Kramer.” Check out the full story below, including insights from our very own Savannah Badalich! "We don't have that endless doomscrolling," Badalich says. "We don't have that place where you're passively consuming content. Discord is about real-time interaction."

🎮 Interested in building interactive Activities on Discord from games to music experiences and more?
Our very own Justin Beckwith joined Sean Falconer at Software Engineering Daily to discuss why developers looking for a platform to build their game or interactive experience should consider Discord. Spoiler alert - we help you build, share, distribute, get discovered, and monetize your creations. Justin breaks down our developer tools, the tech behind the platform, and tips for getting started. "One of the funnest projects I’ve ever worked on here at Discord has been the release of Activities—making it so that developers can build HTML5 JavaScript games and put them right into Discord. Web games aren’t entirely new, but the twist we’re able to put on it that’s a lot of fun is bringing the social structure to that game. Instead of starting a game on your own and playing solo, you can do it with friends. You can do it in a video call - have context, have video, voice, chat - all of that already taken care of, and bring your game into that environment." Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gG2tTMbG
