I recently presented at a knowledge management conference on how we use project retrospectives to improve business processes. It was a resounding success. Two weeks prior, I did a 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 for a small audience at Dome, and the first bit of feedback was... "You should change the background of all the slides. It kinda freaked me out."  Thinking I was invoking a mindset of finding clarity through the haze, I used a forest scene in a murky fog. Think “Blair Witch Project.” 😬 Oops. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.     We recently gathered our leadership team for a two-day strategic planning off-site forum. Preparing for this event is a two-month effort to ensure it goes off without a hitch. The agenda is carefully constructed down to the minute, as one activity leads to the next.  At 7 pm the night before, Meredith Hargreaves and I did one last dress rehearsal, playing out how each exercise would transpire, only to realize that a pivotal activity was missing the mark. We re-built the agenda, and 36 hours later, the leadership team lauded the success of the off-site. Our dress rehearsal identified this critical adjustment.    𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴.  During last year's offsite, we decided to develop and launch a new learning program called Role-Based Learning (RBL). We ask folks in Operations to develop and lead the trainings. Each month is a different topic facilitated by different people. Ensuring the sessions are well-conceived and delivered, our Learning and Development team meets periodically with the trainers to provide feedback. Our final prep session is a dry run - a slide-by-slide step through.  Once we see how the puzzle pieces have come together, we often see what pieces are missing. We re-sequence, pull content out, and put new content in. With this fine tuning, RBL is proving to be a big hit.     𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴.  Dress rehearsals apply to any number of situations: Preparing for a client meeting, using a pilot program before launching a new software, or role-playing a crucial conversation. They are not just for Broadway.  When all eyes are on you and the stakes are high, going in cold is playing with fire.  We hope you enjoyed this month's Dome Insights by Steve Long.  #domeinsights #domeconstruction #dressrehearsal #dryrun

We are thrilled to showcase the new headquarters we recently completed for a confidential client in Santa Clara, CA. Partnering with Arc Tec, the project unfolded over multiple phases, including preconstruction, demolition, and culminating in the final build-out. We delivered a high-end MEP design-build tenant improvement, totaling 330,000 square feet across two existing office buildings. Our scope included improvements to six floors of office space, one floor dedicated to labs and servers, and half a ground floor for training rooms and additional office space. The revamped office spaces feature new open workspaces, conference and meeting rooms, private offices, an extended break room, and all-gender restrooms. For the lab space, we installed new HVAC units, a rooftop chiller, a Libert unit for the server room, electrical distribution panels, and power installations for equipment locations. Additionally, the main lobby received a modern makeover with a new ceiling, wall paneling, a stylish reception desk, and enhanced lighting. This successful collaboration with Arc Tec and our MEP Trade Partners, McMillan Electric and All Temperature Service Air Conditioning, Inc. reflects our commitment to collaboratively delivering innovative and high-quality solutions tailored to our clients' needs! #DomeBuilds #BayAreaConstruction

From skilled laborers and project managers to architects and engineers, their dedication, craftsmanship, and innovation have shaped the cities and communities we live in today. This month is a reminder of how diversity strengthens our industry. By embracing different perspectives and backgrounds, we unlock new opportunities for growth and innovation. We’re proud to have sponsored this year’s Women in Construction Conference, hosted by Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange and Construction Industry Education Foundation! This event brought together passionate leaders to discuss how we can create a more inclusive and diverse future in the construction industry. Our very own Melissa Berg, Director of Inclusion, Culture, and Engagement, participated in a panel about fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for the LGBTQ+ community. Her insights inspired attendees to think about how we can all drive meaningful change. Let’s continue building a future where everyone belongs! #HereWeBuild #WICConference #WomenInConstruction #Inclusion #Diversity

Now that our summer internship program has wrapped up and our interns are back at school, we’re proud to reflect on the valuable experiences they gained. They’ve had hands-on opportunities working alongside our project teams, contributing to impactful projects across different sectors. From building strong relationships with trade partners to learning the importance of effective communication and teamwork, our interns have developed crucial skills that will serve them well in their future construction careers. Over the summer, our interns were inspired by Dome’s progressive and inclusive culture, where they were encouraged to ask questions, step up to challenges, and engage in continuous learning. Whether it was witnessing the complexity of life science projects or developing a passion for field leadership, they took full advantage of the diverse opportunities Dome offers. Programs like Dome University and role-based learning further reinforced their growth, empowering them to see how their classroom knowledge can be applied in real-world scenarios. We are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm our interns brought to the table this summer, and we can’t wait to see how they apply these experiences to their future careers in construction.
