  • South San Francisco’s biotech industry has come a long way since its early days. When Genentech was founded in 1976, it set the stage for what would become a global hub for life sciences. By the mid-'80s, just a handful of biotech companies called the city home. A decade later, the sector was rapidly expanding, and by the early 2000s, it was booming. Today, South San Francisco is at the forefront of biotech innovation, home to over 250 companies and millions of square feet of cutting-edge research space. It’s where life-saving medicines and therapies are developed, tested, and perfected—where science shapes the future. At Dome Construction, we’ve been part of this journey from the start. Our headquarters sits right at the center of this thriving biotech ecosystem, where we continue building the next generation of labs, manufacturing plants, and research spaces. Since 2000, we have completed over 1,000 life science projects in South San Francisco. We continue to expand our industry expertise with offices in Sacramento, San Diego and Thousand Oaks, delivering high-performance, future-ready facilities for the life sciences sector across California. We don’t just build facilities—we build the spaces that fuel discovery. Our projects integrate cutting-edge technology to support breakthrough research, sustainable design to enhance longevity and minimize environmental impact, and adaptable solutions to ensure that labs can evolve with scientific advancements. From then to now, and into the future, Dome remains the contractor of choice for life sciences. Visit us today at ISPE San Francisco | Bay Area Chapter Vendor Night, booth #77, as we celebrate decades of industry innovation and look ahead to what’s next. #DomeBuilds #Biotech #ISPESFBayArea #LifeSciences

  • The early 2000s ushered in a new era of biotechnology, with targeted therapies, gene sequencing, and personalized medicine transforming the industry. These breakthroughs demanded state-of-the-art, adaptable facilities capable of supporting rapid advancements in research and production while meeting strict regulatory standards. Dome evolved alongside the industry, partnering with CRB to deliver a cutting-edge manufacturing facility for Abgenix (Now Boehringer Ingelheim) setting new standards in biopharmaceutical production. From cleanrooms to specialized labs and biomanufacturing plants, our designs enabled groundbreaking research and high-performance production. By 2010, Dome had built strong relationships with over 100 clients in the biotech industry, a testament to our ability to anticipate evolving needs and support medical advancements that redefined what’s possible. Building on this foundation, we have continued to push the boundaries of life sciences construction, ensuring that each facility supports the next wave of innovation. As biotech progressed, Dome remained at the forefront, shaping the spaces where breakthroughs happened—and where the future of medicine took shape. #DomeBuilds #Biotech #ISPESFBayArea

  • The ‘90s saw an explosion of biotech innovation, and Dome was there to build the future. With advancements in genetic engineering, drug discovery, and large-scale pharmaceutical production, life sciences companies faced a new challenge—creating highly specialized, adaptable facilities that could support cutting-edge research and rapidly evolving technologies. As the demand for new treatments and groundbreaking therapies grew, so did the need for state-of-the-art laboratories, clean rooms, and research centers designed to meet the industry’s strict regulatory and operational requirements. Over the decade, Dome continued its collaboration with Genentech, completing their B3B Manufacturing project in 1992, and partnered with emerging industry leaders like Chiron, Bayer, and BioMarin to deliver high-performance, precision-engineered facilities that enabled scientists to push the boundaries of what was possible. Whether it was constructing biomanufacturing plants, wet labs, or high-containment research spaces, our team worked to ensure that each project was built for longevity, scalability, and compliance with evolving industry standards. Our ability to combine structural integrity with forward-thinking solutions meant that companies could scale, evolve, and continue their life-changing work in spaces designed for innovation. As we reflect on this transformative era, we take pride in our role in shaping the biotech landscape and laying the foundation for today's cutting-edge life sciences facilities. #DomeBuilds #Biotech #ISPESFBayArea

  • This year’s ISPE San Francisco | Bay Area Chapter Vendor Night theme, "Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Future," honors the innovations that have shaped the pharmaceutical industry and the advancements still to come. As we reflect on these milestones, we’re reminded of how South San Francisco has evolved into the "Birthplace of Biotech," a global life sciences hub. Dome Construction has been part of this transformation from the beginning. In 1985, we were proud to be part of the team that completed what was then the world’s largest biotech manufacturing plant at Genentech’s South San Francisco campus. At a time when biotech was still in its infancy, this project helped pave the way for large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing, enabling the production of life-changing medicines. It also launched a 40-year partnership with Genentech and cemented our expertise in life sciences construction, setting the foundation for our reputation as a trusted industry leader. This groundbreaking facility propelled both Genentech and the broader biotech industry into a new era, supporting large-scale production and expanding the possibilities of modern medicine. It was a testament to our ability to build complex, high-performance research and manufacturing spaces that meet the industry’s evolving demands. As we gear up for ISPE Vendor Night, we reflect on how far the industry has come—from the early biotech breakthroughs of the ‘80s to today’s advancements in gene therapy, biologics, and precision medicine—and how Dome continues to help shape the future of pharmaceutical and biotechnology innovation. #DomeBuilds #Biotech #ISPESFBayArea

  • Last week, we came together to celebrate Women in Construction Week and the incredible women shaping the future of our industry!    From a job walk and panel discussion—with our friends at Western Allied Mechanical joining us on-site—to a lunch and a Women in Construction trivia game at our office, our teams engaged in meaningful conversations and a little friendly competition. Our San Diego team also joined a NAWIC San Diego Chapter 21 event to connect with and celebrate women across the industry. One of the standout moments from our panel discussion was this powerful insight from Dome Associate Project Engineer, Miguel Balatbat:  "Throughout your career, you may encounter men who challenge you in frustrating ways. However, there are far more men in this industry who respect and support you for your strength and perseverance. Focus on those who uplift you, and don’t let negativity bring you down. Keep pushing for the change you want to see in this industry." We are proud to champion diversity and inclusion in construction—not just during WIC Week, but every day. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this week a success! #WomenInConstruction #WICWeek #DomeBuilds #DomeIncludes

  • To celebrate Women in Construction Week, we’re excited to share Hard Hatted Woman—a song written by our very own Kara Hermann, P.E., MEP Coordinator and singer/songwriter. Kara writes songs about construction, empowerment, and resilience, and this one is a tribute to the hardworking women making an impact in our industry. Last year, our Dome team joined in to bring this song to life in a fun and inspiring video, and we’re sharing it again to honor the incredible women in construction. Check out the video and join us in celebrating the women shaping our industry! #WomenInConstruction #HardHattedWoman #WICWeek
