When it comes to improving sudden cardiac arrest survival rates, there’s strength in numbers. We are honored to be a part of the intricate process of making Dothan the first HeartSafe city in Alabama. Creating a HEARTSafe Community isn't just about AEDs and CPR training, it is a comprehensive approach to improving outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest. The Southeast Health Foundation recognized the need for life-saving improvements in our community and has worked diligently alongside the Dothan Fire Department, the Southeast Alabama Emergency Medical Services Council, the City of Dothan, and the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce this past year to strengthen the chain of survival in Dothan. If your organization would like to be a link in the chain of cardiac arrest survival please contact the Southeast Health Foundation at 334-673-4150. #HeartSafeCity #LoveDothan #DothanHousing #YouAreOurWhy

How has housing positively or negatively affected your mental health? It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and as an affordable housing agency, we understand and know that housing affects mental health. Through proven studies across the nation, stable housing almost always has a positive effect on mental health versus instability, providing adverse effects and stressors that enhance experienced mental illness. According to a study completed by Andrew Fenelon, The Impact of Housing Assistance on the Mental Health of Children in the United States, the team was able to examine this firsthand. Here is an excerpt from their study: “We account for selection into housing assistance using a pseudo-waitlist method that compares children receiving assistance to those who will enter housing assistance within two years of their interview. Compared to those in the pseudo-waitlist group, we find that children living in public housing have better mental health outcomes.” Outside of affordable housing, our ability or inability to achieve any housing goals matters. Be that applying for a homeownership loan, making rent payments, making mortgage payments, moving, selling a home, etc. If any challenges or roadblocks are faced, there is a potential for existing mental illness symptoms to increase in severity. When our agencies create partnerships that attract, recruit, and retain landlords to expand affordable housing services or partner with developers, organizations, or nonprofits to expand services, we contribute to a healthier society. When we practice #FairHousing principles and stipulations, we negate frustrations and anguish—fair housing opportunities matter. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #YouAreOurWhy #affordablehousing #housing #LoveDothan #homelessprevention #SEACHAL508CoC

The Fair Housing Five and The Haunted House was written by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center and Illustrated by Sharika Mahdi. This year, Dothan Housing wanted to contribute to our local community’s knowledge of Fair Housing in a fun way. Dothan Housing petitioned its friends at the Dothan Houston County Library System to add the book to the library. After following the procedure, the book passed the Director’s inspection! This was an excellent way to connect with our community and our local library during Fair Housing Month as we continue to bring awareness to affordable housing and its many aspects! The initiative described above is another excellent example of being a good #CorporateNeighbor and exposing citizens to corporate/agency/organization ideas in a way that is fun and benefits the community. #YouAreOurWhy #TheFairHousingFive #fairhousing #fairhousingact #affordablehousing #housing discrimination #library #books #learningisfun #LoveDothan
