Last week I had the honor of helping lead a delegation to visit one of the most vibrant quantum technology clusters in the world and came home with several insights as we continue to develop our quantum ecosystem in Chicago. Located near Montreal, the cities of Bromont and Sherbrooke have developed a major quantum footprint with several key elements: 1. Large industry: An IBM microelectronics factory and quantum computing center, Teledyne FLIR semiconductor fab 2. Shared-use facilities: Small-scale (Institut quantique - Université de Sherbrooke with several dilution fridges for faculty and industry and a nearby small-scale chip fab) to medium scale (DistriQ, Zone d'innovation quantique de Sherbrooke with more dilution fridges and a quantum computing manufacturing facility) to pre-industrial-scale (C2MI center with custom fab capabilities) 3. Academic research: Université de Sherbrooke faculty and core facilities in quantum and microelectronics 4. Venture capital: A new $24M dedicated fund for early stage quantum is based at the DistriQ accelerator (Quantacet fund) 5. Startup accelerators: Accelerator services are provided by QV Studio, a venture studio housed in the shared use facility Espace Quantique 6. Government support: The city, provincial and national government all provided significant support to the ecosystem with funding to enable the range of facilities and services offered. During the visit I also had a chance to conduct a few town halls on innovation with the leadership teams at Concordia University, one of the largest universities in Canada with 50,000 students as well as Université de Sherbrooke. The brief visit was incredibly productive and I was joined by fellow leaders from Polsky Center at the University of Chicago who run America's first quantum incubator Duality, Chicago Quantum Exchange, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, University of Chicago, Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, and Great Lakes Crystal Technologies. With 40% of federal investment in quantum, a $500M quantum investment commitment from the state, designation as a U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hub in quantum, and major corporate/startup/research partners, Chicago & Illinois is poised to be one of the world's most important hubs of quantum technology. “We are building an ecosystem at the University of Chicago and having partners is really what makes the engine run,” said Dan Sachs, executive director of Polsky Deep Tech Ventures. Creating a space to spark these relationships, the Polsky Center last week held its annual "Corporate Collision." A special thank you to McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. for sponsoring the event.

🌟 Exciting Day at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory! 🌟 Last week, I had the honor and privilege of organizing a tour to one of the world's premier National Accelerators funded by the DOE; as part of a nationwide initiative to develop the world's most powerful quantum computers and sensors. It was an absolute thrill for our startups from Duality Quantum Accelerator and students from Booth School of Business to embark on a captivating visit to the Fermi National Laboratory, situated just outside Chicago. The highlight of our visit? Without a doubt, it was the awe-inspiring experience of exploring the SQMS Center. Here, we were granted access to witness first-hand the marvels of quantum technology, including the world's largest cooling power dilution refrigerator and the superconducting quantum computing platform. For many of us, this visit marked the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream—a true bucket list moment that had been years in the making. A huge shoutout to everyone involved in making this tour possible and for facilitating such an enriching experience. The insights gained and the knowledge shared during our time at Fermilab will undoubtedly shape the founders' future endeavors and inspire them to reach new heights in their respective fields. Here's to unforgettable experiences, shared learning, and the pursuit of scientific excellence! 🚀🔬 #FermilabTour #SQMSCenter #ScienceEducation #DreamsComeTrue
