Duke global health students, like Maddie Kitts, are preparing to display their research skills at DGHI's annual Global Health Showcase on October 21. The event will feature student research projects from more than a dozen countries. Kitts remembers attending the Global Health Research Showcase last year as a 1st-year MS in Global Health student. She was in awe of the presenters who, in that moment, became more than students: they were researchers. Now, Kitts will have the chance to do the same at this year’s event as she’ll share her research on sickle cell disease in Uganda and how that fieldwork experience has shaped her approach to global health. Read more about Kitt's research in the story below, and then join us on October 21 to see the amazing work that more than 50 Duke global health students completed over the summer. 📆: Monday, October 21 🕛: 12 - 1:30 pm 📍: Great Hall, Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education, Duke University https://lnkd.in/eBjWqKsn

Duke student Daniel Lee spent eight weeks this summer working with the only clinic providing sickle cell treatment to communities scattered among the 84 islands in Uganda's Lake Victoria. He shares how many of his days began with him and his Ugandan partners boarding a small, motorized canoe to bring treatment to children with the painful blood disease.

Hena Vadher MS'25 was supposed to spend this summer doing fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but escalating conflict halted her travels. Instead, she found an unexpected research opportunity elsewhere: Panama City, Panama. While Vadher's work focused on the relationship between malaria, migration and climate-driven factors, she left the country with not just new skills, but a hope that her work can influence malaria eradication efforts in the area for those who call it home.

School is back in session for more than 300 Duke University global health students! Among them is the diverse new cohort of Master of Science in Global Health students. 60% of the new MS-GH class comes from outside of the United States—with students from Canada, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Jamaica and Saudi Arabia—and they speak 22 languages. “The diversity of perspectives and experiences that all of these students bring is a special feature of Duke’s global health program and greatly enhances the ability of our entire DGHI community to work to achieve health equity around the world,” says Joseph Egger, DGHI’s director of academic programs.
