Truly intriguing! Aircraft contrails – we've all seen them in the blue sky. Have you ever wondered how they contribute to global warming once they form? Would you guess that it depends on whether it’s daytime or nighttime? Irene Ortiz Abuja from the University Carlos III of Madrid and her colleagues have developed an AI-based method and analyzed satellite data collected by EUMETSAT. Here are the key findings: 1. During the day, contrails reflect sunlight, having a cooling effect on Earth's temperature. 2. At night, however, contrails trap outgoing infrared radiation that would otherwise escape into space. Keep in mind that day and night vary depending on latitude and change throughout the year. Now, they aim to extend their studies for more insights.
