Getting Hydrogen to Work

About us

For marine applications such as electrical generators on ocean-going vessels, main propulsion for inland / coastal vessels, and power for refrigerated containers,hydrogen-powered PEM fuel cells are the logical choice to achieve “low-to-no” carbon emissions in keeping with IMO 2030/50 and other regulations. In fact, fuel cells already have many advantages over diesel engines, such as fuel efficiency, low maintenance and repair costs, and no other harmful emissions such as particulates, SOX and NOX. The big question is how to deliver hydrogen onboard safely and efficiently; the answer is the methanol-to-hydrogen generator technology being developed by e1 Marine. The e1 Marine hydrogen generator solution makes the hydrogen generator / fuel cell combination a near-term reality and an attractive choice even as compared to diesel generators today.

Will shore power be exempt from the EU’s revised Energy Taxation Directive?   According to Maritime Reporter and Engineering News, the ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) and The Federation of European Private Port Companies and Terminals (FEPORT) have shared collective support for shore power tax exemption in the EU.   The organisations have called for this mandatory tax exemption for shore power in the EU’s revised Energy Taxation Directive. The exemption would further incentivize the uptake of shore power systems in ports, delivering critical emissions reductions for ships' cold ironing in ports around the globe.   Ships at berth contribute heavily to local air and water pollution. Their auxiliary engines typically run on marine gasoil or diesel to power onboard systems, releasing toxic pollutants including sulphur dioxide (SOx), nitrogen dioxide (NOx),particulate matter (PM), and CO2.   For more information on the EU’s revised Energy Taxation Directive, click the link below:   https://lnkd.in/eiCkSa9W   #Maritime #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #Port

Latest shore power decarbonisation developments in Sweden supported by the EU!   Ports of Stockholm has committed to the installation of two onshore power facilities for cruise ships at Stadsgården quays; enabled with funding from the European Union and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Klimatklivet initiative.   The first of two shore power facilities is operational and serves cruise vessels coming and going from the busy Stockholm port. According to The Maritime Executive, at least 45 per cent of cruise calls in Stockholm can now connect to 100% renewably sourced electricity.   It’s encouraging to see the EU, as well as local governments supporting renewable shore power solutions. Driving positive change to encourage the adoption and development of innovative technology that supports the use of hydrogen as a fuel for the international maritime markets.   Click the link below to read the full Maritime Executive feature: https://lnkd.in/eg-RsZcP #Maritime #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #Port

Excited to see the recent formation of the Clean Maritime Fuels Platform, an initiative designed to enhance collaboration between ship operators and fuel producers. Founding members, including Methanol Institute, European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA)FuelsEuropeeFuel AllianceEWABA, and Hydrogen Europe, have united to focus on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.    This initiative will be crucial in supporting the production and adoption of clean marine fuels as we work towards a sustainable, competitive future for European shipping.   Renewable fuels produced from sustainable sources offer significant reductions in GHG emissions and harmful pollutants. Their compatibility with existing infrastructure and access to abundant supply make them an ideal solution for the shipping industry’s decarbonization.    Read more via Offshore Energy https://lnkd.in/eZJQEWzH   #Maritime #CleanFuels #Sustainability

A recent study from The International Council on Clean Transportation makes a compelling case for greater investment in shore power at ports worldwide. In 2019 alone, at-berth vessels in the U.S. emitted more than 27,000 tonnes of pollutants and over 1.4 million tonnes of CO2. This study reaffirms what we've been advocating: with modular, mobile power units, ports can easily integrate renewable energy sources, providing sustainable shore power that meets the evolving needs of today’s supply chain and improves air quality for nearby communities. e1 Marine’s containerized methanol-hydrogen fuel cell power solution eliminates 99% of EPA-regulated emissions such as NOx, SOx, and PM, providing a cost-effective, clean alternative to diesel generators, cutting CO2 emissions by 28%. If green methanol is used, the system has the potential to achieve near-zero greenhouse gas emissions, with an 85% reduction possible.
