About us
When Ray and Charles Eames were asked “What are the boundaries of design?” they responded by turning the question on its head: “What are the boundaries of problems?” It is in this spirit that we introduce the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, where the lessons Ray and Charles left us through their body of work, and more importantly, how they approached that work, are brought to life for a new generation willing to explore the “boundaries of problems.”

⭐✂️ What role does paper play in your creative process? For the Eameses, collage functioned like an analog version of Photoshop. They often cut out paper objects and pieced them together to quickly imagine what a magazine cover might look like—or the box for House of Cards, for example. And the remaining scraps didn’t go to waste. Ray had an entire drawer labeled “Scraps” where bits of paper found a temporary home until they were fished out for another project. Here, a peek inside the scrap drawer reveals several metallic papers. Explore more of Ray’s paper scraps: https://lnkd.in/gGZW4bRZ © Eames Office, LLC. All rights reserved. 📸: Nicholas Calcott

If we had to pinpoint where the genius of the Eameses began, it would be in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan—home of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. A graduate school for art and design, the Cranbrook Academy of Art isn’t just where Ray and Charles met—it was also an epicenter of mid-century modernism. Influential modernist figures including the Saarinens, Florence Knoll, and Harry Bertoia all have connections to the academy. A good office is more than just chairs and desks—it can inspire good work, too. 💼 As the Eameses said, “If there really is a desire to make the product good…then there must be goodness all the way down the line… To want the materials to be good, the package to be good, the delivery to be good, the printed matter, the office, the plant.” Learn how our workspace facilitates our preservation of the Eames legacy: https://lnkd.in/e4kXJyb6 📸: Nicholas Calcott #officedesign

Curious what our office looks like? Take a peek behind the scenes at the Eames Institute 👀 When searching for a central location to consolidate our collection, unite our team, and create a space to welcome visitors, we landed on a former medical equipment manufacturing facility in Richmond, CA. Our workspace has a number of small details that make it more than the sum of its parts. The glow of the Noguchi lanterns might catch your eye—or the Jeff Canham wooden plants (since the building is also where our archives live, we can’t keep real plants). You might even spot some vintage Eames pieces from our auxiliary collection as well as new pieces that are still in production. As Charles Eames once said, “The details are not details—they make the product.” Learn more about our office design: https://lnkd.in/decE4hwz 📸: Nicholas Calcott #officedesign
