When Ray and Charles Eames were asked “What are the boundaries of design?” they responded by turning the question on its head: “What are the boundaries of problems?” It is in this spirit that we introduce the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, where the lessons Ray and Charles left us through their body of work, and more importantly, how they approached that work, are brought to life for a new generation willing to explore the “boundaries of problems.”

Ray and Charles Eames continually worked to explore the limits of different materials, finding new and innovative uses for them. “They were at the cutting edge of what these materials could do,” shares Eames Institute Chief Curator Llisa Demetrios.
In honor of introducing the highly sustainable bamboo-based upholstery as an option for Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, we visited with Charles and Ray Eames’s grandchildren, Eames Demetrios of Eames Office and Llisa Demetrios of Eames Institute. They talk about what the iconic design means to them and the lasting impressions Charles and Ray left on them about the iterative nature of design, the role of hospitality, and what it takes to make an heirloom. Of the tens of thousands of objects in the Eames Archives, some of our favorites are the drawers from Ray and Charles’s office. These contain objects and tools they created over the course of their careers, including paper scale-model cut-outs of staff and office visitors, which they used to help lend a sense of realism to photographs and films in the pre-Photoshop era. I enjoyed very much talking with Booth Moore of WWD about how Ray & Charles Eames communicated ideas while solving problems through design after a public tour at the new location of Eames Institute in Richmond, CA. Here is an excerpt from her recent article "Design Problem-solving at the Center of Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity's New Galleries'': "The thing I learned very quickly from (my grandparents Ray & Charles Eames) is what they called 'found learning. Just being around them and being at their office or at their home, you learn how they did things and how they solve problems," she says during a recent tour, explaining her goal with the space is to impart some of that wisdom through storytelling by using the nearly 40,000 objects in the archives.

On an amazing tour by Giovanna Castiglioni of her father Achille Castiglioni's studio in Milan last year, she shared not just information about the beautiful objects but also told stories and gave insightful observations about growing up in her family. She spoke with warmth and enthusiasm of how the focus was on learning by playing, iterating on an idea, and the honest use of material. That is what and how I like to share too about growing up with my grandparents Ray and Charles Eames. I felt like we were twins. I was thrilled to welcome Giovanna to the Eames Institute to give her a tour of the Eames Archives, and share my similar stories of growing up with the boundless curiosity that Ray and Charles brought to their designs like Achille had. That sense of always learning that Giovanna had described all felt so familiar to me from my childhood. Marvelous to see both the Castiglioni and Eames legacies celebrated in this article in the Financial Times as Giovanna and I both continue to iterate and prototype ways to share our family legacies into the future! 📸: Brian Flaherty for The Financial Times
