As Florida faces catastrophe in the wake of Hurricane Milton, communities across the southeastern U.S. are still devastated by Hurricane Helene – one of the deadliest storms in the nation’s history. Scientists are directly linking the unprecedented intensity and frequency of these storms to warming waters in the Gulf of Mexico caused by global climate change. These researchers have stated that climate change from burning fossil fuels has made storms like Hurricanes Helene and Milton more than twice as likely. “Climate change is here, and we must do more to protect health, wellbeing and safety, especially in our most vulnerable communities.” -Abbie Dillen, President of Earthjustice. Governor Newsom's veto of Senate Bill 674 is a major setback for communities impacted by refinery pollution. These vulnerable populations deserve real-time air monitoring and accountability. Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley air districts must now update their rules to protect communities. Governor Newsom must ensure all air districts adopt these essential protections that SB 674 would have established. Proud to announce that two Earthjustice staff members, Jeremy Orr and Julian Gonzalez, are being honored by the Congressional Black Caucus in their 40 and 40 "Young Gifted and Green" program.
Honored to be named a 2024 Young, Gifted & Green 40 Under 40 awardee! As a civil rights and environmental lawyer, I’ve dedicated my entire career to supporting the most impacted and marginalized communities around the country in our shared fight for liberation —so to also receive this award during this year’s Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference makes it that much more meaningful. A huge THANK YOU to Young, Gifted & Green™ for this recognition, and for their work of amplifying the tireless efforts of all those who are committed to justice and equity.
