While my climate work doesn't usually focus on food waste, this issue is particularly important to me. The waste of edible food drives me absolutely crazy. I'm always glad to see advancements in how we are going to reduce food waste, and this strategy seems particularly important. It aims to change business and individual behaviors, fund research to extend food shelf life, expand food donations, and turn waste into valuable commodities like compost and animal feed. The government will also invest in research to measure the “effectiveness of different consumer messages to encourage households to reduce food waste” and help students learn food waste prevention tips, including in school cafeterias, which can be enormous sources of food waste. California is furthest along. Since 2022, the state has required grocery stores to donate, not throw away, “the maximum amount of edible food that would otherwise be disposed,” or face fines. This year, large restaurants, hotels, and hospital cafeterias also came under the law. The legislation also requires every city and county to reduce the volume of organic waste that goes into landfills by 75 percent by 2025, compared with 2014 levels. That means building more composting facilities or putting in machines that create biogas from organic waste. 🌍 Feeling Climate Anxiety? You're Not Alone. 🌱 I've been thinking about the mounting number of people affected by climate anxiety (aka eco anxiety), myself included. As someone who's experienced this in the past and still does from time to time, I understand how overwhelming it can be. To help manage these feelings, build a supportive community, and share our experiences, I’m considering hosting a Climate Anxiety Workshop. This workshop will focus on practical ways to cope with eco anxiety and create a space for meaningful connections. Is this something you'd be interested in? 👍 Like this post and let me know! Your feedback will help shape this initiative. Let's come together to support each other and make a positive impact. 🌍💚 #ClimateAnxiety #EcoAnxiety #Sustainability #MentalHealth #CommunitySupport #EarthMeUp #EarthedUp

A sharing and rental economy is a great direction to strive for in order to reduce our consumption and shift the way society views ownership vs utility. Take a look at this post to learn more!
I love building community, simplifying my life, saving money, AND protecting the planet. If you're looking to enjoy these benefits, check out my latest post diving into the benefits of a sharing economy. I define a sharing economy as a societal standard that enables us to buy fewer things via renting or sharing with others. For example, instead of buying a carpet cleaning vacuum, rent one from PetSmart, Home Depot, or elsewhere. Instead of buying a cooler for your upcoming road trip, borrow your neighbor Sarah's. If your friend is going to a wedding, loan them one of your dresses. If your dog no longer uses his crate, post it on a BuyNothing page. Restorative efforts are so important with our current environmental state. This is truly a remarkable accomplishment that shouldn’t go unnoticed. Congrats Ecosia
Restoring Brazil’s rainforests 🌳 In this area alone, we planted 50,000 trees to help restore the Atlantic Rainforest 🌱 Just look at that progress! Amazing work from our partners Centro de Pesquisas Ambientais do Nordeste - Cepan and REGUA. #forests #rainforest #reforestation

EPA has announced the automatic addition of seven PFAS to the list of chemicals covered by the Toxics Release Inventory. Facilities in designated industry sectors and federal facilities using these chemicals above set quantities must now report how much of each chemical is released into the environment or managed as waste. Requiring reporting on these chemicals helps to further our commitment to address the impacts of #PFAS and advance EPA’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap to confront the human health and environmental risks of these forever chemicals.

It's clear that our current model doesn't work. For capitalism to work, we assume that growth = success. But living on a planet with limited resources, we can't support infinite growth. Scarcity is inherent. We need to be conscious consumers and make decisions with long-term thinking in mind. Instead of buying new goods because we can afford it (or even if we can't), we need to ask ourselves: Can we fix up something we already own? Can we repurpose something else? Can we buy second-hand? Can we buy something that is made from recycled goods? Do we really need to make this purchase?

"It's cheaper to throw them away." Billions invested in bike sharing. Now there are millions of bikes in landfills like these. It's cheaper to dump them than recycle them. But bikes are just the peak of an iceberg. With e-commerce and free returns, it's like adding fuel to the fire. 3 million tons of returned products end up landfilled in the US each year. People try stuff once. Send it back. And because repackaging is more expensive, perfectly fine goods get burned and dumped. So what are the takeaways here? 1. Landfilling and burning of perfectly fine goods must be banned. 2. Producers must take FULL responsibility for their stuff. 3. People can shop less. Repair, reuse, or rent first. What's your best tip to produce less waste? #wastemanagement #circulareconomy #sustainability PS: Credits to Nathan for the post and thanks Cathrine for sharing!
