Last week, we gathered despite the rain to reflect on EB PREC's work over the last year and discuss the road ahead at our DIY-style, Annual Member Meeting. The evening was filled with delicious food, gifts exchanged, impromptu poetry, musical performances and so much more. Thank you to everyone who showed up (especially the folks who hung out with us all evening over zoom)! EB PREC wishes you all a restful holiday as we look toward 2025. Dismantling the extractive real estate market doesn't happen overnight, but our community's continued commitment to creating #landwithoutlandlords reminds us of our progress and the realm of new possibilities we are co-creating together. (Song Credit: A very special shoutout to our Anti-Displacement Staff-Owners Bee & Chris for their track "Rooted in the Deep"!) #restorativeeconomics #healpeoplepower

Land Without Landlords
About us
The East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative (EB PREC) is a worker-cooperative organizing with tenants & community groups across the East Bay to take land and housing off of the speculative market for good, creating permanently affordable housing and commercial spaces. EB PREC is working to reverse the harm caused to historically disenfranchised communities through its practices of collective ownership, self-determination, and community-led development. Our movement is People Of Color (POC)-centered and focused on maintaining and creating deeply diverse communities in the face of rampant speculation and rising real estate prices. #LandWithoutLandlords #RestorativeEconomics #HealPeoplePower

EB PREC was given a shoutout alongside other organizations challenging capitalism in the Black Agenda Report's review of Malaika Jabali’s "It’s Not You, It’s Capitalism: Why It’s Time to Break Up and How to Move On". "Jabali’s book is devoted to capitalism’s history and analysis of what it is, an ever more brutal system in which those with investment capital seek maximum returns on anything they can privatize, from slave labor to student debt, regardless of consequences for people or the planet...but this book isn’t a downer. She spends as much time describing this and other creative organizing to free ourselves from capitalism as she spends describing its most hideous manifestations." This Wednesday, our Executive Director Noni Session will be moderating the panel "Reparations AI: Housing" for the Data for Black Lives III Conference. "In cities like Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City, Black people make up more than 55% of the homeless population. The eviction rate of Black women is now comparable to the incarceration rate of Black men. Credit default swaps, securitization, derivative models, eviction databases, credit scores, and recent artificial intelligence-driven housing speculation have all been used to undermine access to permanent affordable housing in big cities and rural areas Researchers, organizers, activists, and families are resisting the destruction and displacement of Black communities through direct action, policy making, and new applications of data." We're incredibly excited to welcome Omni Commons into the family. Omni Commons, the radical community organizing space developed in the wake of the Occupy Movement in 2014, faced severe financial difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic. Over the last three years, we have watched the historic space teeter on the edge of foreclosure; and when this unique cultural space that has been home to so many movements over the last decade was to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, we knew we had to step in. EB PREC moved swiftly with our nonprofit affiliate partner, the Collective Action and Land Liberation Institute (CALLI), to finance the acquisition of the embattled building making Omni the seventh liberated property in our cooperative network.
