Nearly 22% of all undergraduate students are raising children while pursuing their education. Alison Griffin's recent article in Forbes examines the challenges these student parents face and the steps policymakers, institutional leaders and advocates can take to support them. The piece features insights from Amber Angel, program officer at ECMC Foundation, highlighting the critical need for systems change.
September is Student Parent Month. Did you know 1 in 5 #highered students is a #parent? These learners balance two very demanding worlds -- the challenge of academic studies and classroom deadlines and the responsibility of meeting the needs of their children. My latest piece in Forbes examines the challenges faced by student parents and the policies and practices that could better support their success. 🎥 Jaye Fenderson with Three Frame Media talked with me about her latest docuseries, "Raising Up," which investigates the barriers faced by student parents and profiles campus and community leaders who are supporting these learners. 💰 Amber Angel with ECMC Foundation shared that student parents often feel like they are on the margins of campus life. The Foundation has made a 5-year, $10 million investment in the Single Mother Student Success Initiative and has announced an updated grant making strategy for single mother student parents. 👨👦👦 Chastity Lord, president and CEO of Jeremiah Program talked about the non-profit's 27-year history of advocating for a two-generational strategy in support of student parents. Her commitment to single mothers who are navigating higher education, is evident in her understanding of the practical and tactical solutions that are needed to support their success. 🇺🇸 Tanya Ang, executive director of the Today's Students Coalition (TSC) is advocating for federal policy reform in support of student parents. The TSC has supported Student Parent Month by elevating a Congressional Resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Jerry Moran. 🎓 Daria J. Willis, Ph.D., president of Howard Community College -- a former student parent herself -- has championed the development of the Parent Scholars Program, which aims to address many of the barriers faced by student parents on her campus, and is a model for other #highered leaders. Read more about the complex, but needed reforms in policy and practice critical to supporting student parent success. My latest in Forbes. https://lnkd.in/gXTqx-kj

Congratulations to the 2024-25 cohort of the Postsecondary State CTE Leaders Fellowship! We are proud to support this initiative, which aims to advance an equitable postsecondary CTE system.
Today, Advance CTE announces the 2024-25 cohort of the Postsecondary State CTE Leaders Fellowship at Advance CTE — Sponsored by ECMC Foundation (Fellowship). The Fellowship strives to address the growing shortage of state postsecondary Career Technical Education (CTE) leadership by closing representation gaps and removing barriers to leadership advancement. Through individualized supports, intentional networks, and a real-world Fellowship project, Advance CTE – ECMCF Fellows are gaining the skills and connections to pursue leadership positions and advance high-quality, equitable postsecondary CTE systems in their state. “Advance CTE is thrilled to have the opportunity to launch our third cohort of the Fellowship, through the generous support of the ECMC Foundation. Our dedication is not only to help develop a robust, diverse CTE leadership talent pipeline but also to equip these leaders with the skills and knowledge to create CTE policies that dismantle and rebuild inequitable systems so that all learners can access and succeed in high-quality CTE programs,” said Kate Kreamer, executive director of Advance CTE. “Over the last four years, we have had the opportunity to engage with nearly 30 of the brightest and strongest equity-minded leaders in postsecondary CTE and workforce development through the first two cohorts of the Fellowship. We are excited to engage, learn from, and work with the 20 impressive postsecondary CTE leaders of Cohort 3.” Read the full press release and meet the Fellows here https://lnkd.in/eh5zE85n

ECMC Foundation reposted this
Today is a special day at our Minneapolis office! We are thrilled to celebrate our 2024 GO! Program recipients at our "Giving Is Sweet" Celebration. For the 10th year, ECMC Foundation, in partnership with ECMC Group, has distributed funding to nonprofit organizations nominated and selected by employees of ECMC Group. Over 100 nonprofits that focus on closing equity gaps in education have received a portion of the total $1,005,000 in grants. At the event today, each local grantee was able to share their inspiring story and how they plan to use the funds to make a positive impact. This is a fantastic opportunity for our team to connect with these change-makers and learn about the incredible work they’re doing. Thank you to all who make this possible, and congratulations to our deserving grantees!
