The Ecological Society of America is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of scientists founded in 1915 to promote ecological science by improving communication among ecologists; raise the public’s level of awareness of the importance of ecological science; increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensure the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers. The 9,000 member Society publishes 6 journals, convenes an annual scientific conference, and broadly shares ecological information through policy and media outreach and education initiatives.

Thrilled to be here in Cali helping to represent ESA and Ecology at the Convention for Biodiversity Conference of Parties (#COP16)! Seeing so many economists talking with scientists and scientists talking with economists - all working towards a Nature Positive future #NaturePositive30

A fascinating day at #COP16 in Calí Colombia for the #UN Convention on #Biodiversity #CBD. I am here with the Ecological Socety of America #ESA Delegation and #Harvard University’s #Salata Institute. We have been learning about harnessing global genomic initiatives and managing Digital Sequence Information across sectors; efforts by the private sector to reduce risks to nature; finding a common language between economics and ecology; meeting up with old and new friends; and enjoying art, dance, food and culture from our wonderful Colombian hosts. Announcing November's speakers for ESA's Exploring Career Opportunities in Ecology webinar series. This month, we have two talented ecologists speaking with us, including Pacifica Sommers with Bayer U.S, and Blake Amos with Kinder Morgan. Both work in industry and will give us some unique insight into ecological careers with the industrial sector. Join the Ecological Society of America for the third episode of our webinar series where we talk with working professionals about their experience in finding jobs and navigating new careers. The conversation will be informal and aimed to help career seekers. The webinar will be held LIVE on November 7th from 2-3 PM EST and will be recorded for your viewing / listening pleasure! See the advertisement below for details. There will be time for questions after each speaker. If you’re familiar with Colombian ecology, “Paz con la naturaleza” likely brings to mind sentipensamiento. I’ve been captivated by this concept ever since I learned about it—there’s no better reflection of the deep, harmonious relationship Colombia’s Indigenous Peoples and local communities have with nature. Pioneers of nature-based solutions, long before science formalized the idea. In my view, there is no better region than Latin America to discuss the practical implementation of solutions aimed at restoring and conserving nature. And no better #COP16 host country, where the guardians of biodiversity have been leading the way for centuries. I’m incredibly grateful to the Ecological Society of America for my accreditation (and to Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) and Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) ) for the privilege of participating in these negotiations as an independent scientist and wearing 3 hats (business, NGO, academia). Many who deserve to be here—especially those working on the ground—are not, and that awareness fuels me to stay laser-focused on the “how” of every conversation, whether at ministerial sessions or side events, over these two critical weeks. Here’s my agenda and where you can find me https://lnkd.in/ddc_UjyY - or in line for the best coffee at the GEF Partnership Pavilion (no gatekeeping!). It’s the implementation COP. My First Day at COP16 (UN Biodiversity Conference): A Microbiologist’s Journey Oct. 21.2024 Today was my first time attending any UN Conference, and it’s been an exciting experience. As a microbiology PhD student, I’m used to working in labs, so seeing policymakers in action—negotiating and making decisions that impact entire nations—was eye-opening. It made me think about how science and policy come together, and how important it is to communicate science effectively. One of my goals for this COP is to advocate for microbial communities. They’re important for regulating ecosystems, yet I haven’t seen much focus on them in the conversations about biodiversity. While exploring different pavilions, I asked if microbes were part of the agenda—so far, not much! A big highlight was attending a press conference hosted by Wetlands International, where they discussed the importance of wetlands for biodiversity and climate. I even got the chance to ask a question and share my own research on wetland microbes and how human activities affect them. The positive feedback and connections I made with international delegates were amazing! Overall, it was a great first day, and I’m excited for what’s next! I am grateful to the Ecological Society of America for granting me the observer badge and to Aziz Douai and @FGSR for their generous support in funding my trip. #COP16Columbia

Recently published by the Ecological Society of America: 🌱 🤝 🐜 North Carolina State University and Peruvian researchers examined the beneficial relationship between certain ant species and tropical shrubs (Cordia nodosa) that house the ants in exchange for defense against plant-eating pests. They found that climate change could be destabilizing the mutualistic relationships between insects and plants. The findings could portend the future fracturing of symbiotic relationships that underpin healthy ecosystems. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d5NuSxTM
17 years ago I went to the Amazon jungle in Peru and fell in love with ants. All throughout my graduate career I dreamed of going back to study them, and finally was able to make my dream come true 2 years ago. Our study was just published in the journal of Ecology and I couldn’t be more proud! Thanks to my incredible team of colleagues without whom this research would have been impossible. https://lnkd.in/gSCVsr_N
