💡At the #COP28 climate summit in Dubai in 2023, the international community agreed to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Renewables are already the fastest-growing source of power worldwide, but we need to expand the sector rapidly to meet the 2030 goal. ⚡This month, in the run up to key international moments of change, we're focusing on the valuable opportunities that this year presents to implement laws and policies that can unleash rapid growth in renewables. 👉Head over to our Energy Transition hub to find out more: https://lnkd.in/eMky5AhG #EnergyTransition #CISLEnergyTransition #Renewables #SustainableEnergy

About us
The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is a globally influential Institute developing leadership and solutions for a sustainable economy. Our Rewiring the Economy framework shows how the economy can be ‘rewired’, through focused collaboration between business, government and finance institutions, to deliver positive outcomes for people and environment in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For over three decades we have built individual and organisational leadership capacity and capabilities, and created industry-leading collaborations, to catalyse change and accelerate the path to a sustainable economy. Our Rewiring Leadership framework sets out our model for the leadership needed to achieve this. Our interdisciplinary research engagement builds the evidence base for practical action, through a focus on six cross-cutting themes critical to the delivery of the SDGs: sustainable finance, economic innovation, inclusive development, natural capital, future cities and leadership. Our work Each year we work with business, government and finance leaders in over 250 organisations including consumer brands, global banks and national governments, attracting more than 1,200 delegates into our programmes. Patron The former HRH The Prince of Wales was Royal Founding Patron of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and has been actively involved in a range of our work.

As part of our #CISLEnergyTransition focus for September, yesterday CISL welcomed Dr Jan Rosenow, energy opinion leader, analyst and scholar, to Entopia. Dr Rosenow’s talk focused on where we have come so far in the transition to renewable energy - and where we’re headed. Dr Rosenow talked about the current energy system and the destructive environmental impact of burning fossil fuels: the need for a move to #Renewables based system is urgent. He also debunked some energy myths, driven by naysaying in the media designed to derail progress towards clean energy. There is good news, Dr Rosenow emphasised, in that the #EnergyTransition has gathered speed worldwide, fuelled by the recent energy crisis and record price falls of clean energy technologies. Clean energy investment has exceeded fossil fuel investment since 2016, contrary to commonly held views. However, there’s still a long way to go and key obstacles to overcome, as Dr Rosenow summed up after his talk. Dr Rosenow is the course lead in our self-paced online course, Renewable Energy Foundations for Business, which launches in November. Find out about the course and register your interest, to gain critical foundational knowledge and skills to begin your contribution to the #EnergyTransition.👇 https://ow.ly/muiu50Thro0

And I’m done! Last month I submitted my dissertation, but since then I’ve found myself so caught up in the momentum of work/life/the world in general, that I haven’t spent a moment to reflect on what this means. I’m incredibly lucky that I had the opportunity to study Sustainability Leadership at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) but at the same time, these past 2 years have been intense. With no employer support, a lot of savings, and all of my holidays over the past 2 years have been spent on this course. Being exhausted, but energised is a very strange feeling. But I’m proud. I’ve done it. And I’m so incredibly thankful to my husband, friends and family who have patiently waited for my return to society! I decided to apply for this course as in my role as a Director at Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park, I realised that sustainability was becoming fundamental to all of the decisions I was being asked to make - and if I’m honest, I didn’t have a clue! And where could I look for answers I could trust? A lot of online information just seemed to talk at a very superficial layer, and not back up claims with data. Sure, I could make decent assumptions with the information I had available, but what was the knock on impact of those decisions? That’s when I found the Master’s at CISL. What I didn’t expect, was that my thoughts about my role in IT would change. IT was my day job, I didn’t hate it, but I very much worked to live, and I certainly didn’t really think I could make a difference to the world in it. However, and those of you who have been following along will know, that I got so interested in the link between IT and sustainability that I decided to write my dissertation on it - specifically, the materiality of data. And oh my, did I find some interesting results. That’s possibly for another post, but when I thought everything was pointing towards more technological innovation to solve the problem - turns out it’s actually likely to be team work, collaboration and better business and reporting mechanisms. So technology doesn’t solve everything - who knew! 😉 I’ve developed a new found energy for my work in IT and how I can combine my experience in the world of tech, with my learnings on sustainability from the course. It’s genuinely exciting! This course has given me a greater understanding of the urgency with which we need to work, and how we as leaders within organisations can align our strategic intent with the wider sustainability agenda. And my research has shown me a practical way to do this - it’s not all theory! Most of all, this course has given me hope. We still have time to protect our planet for future generations as well as make it safer for those living on it currently. In a weird and unexpected twist, I went into this course wanting to be a better Director, but I’m leaving it, wanting to be a better person. But first, the sun is finally out and I have some gardening to do…

Announcing the SME Climate Ambition Drive! 📢🌎 Changemakers - this one is for you! We’re working with climate leaders across business and academia to reach 10,000 committed SMEs taking bold climate action through the SME Climate Hub ahead of #COP29. Early supporters of the campaign include IKEA, B Lab, and Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). SMEs, making up 90% of global businesses, employing 70% of the workforce, and contributing over 50% of global GDP, play a vital role in reaching net zero. María Mendiluce, CEO of the We Mean Business Coalition, the host organization of the SME Climate Hub says, mobilizing SMEs towards net zero “will not be successful without the active support of national governments, organizations, and corporations. They must take bold steps to incentivize and reward responsible SMEs within their value chains and networks. Only through this collective effort can we mobilize SMEs at a scale that can have impact in the net zero future." Join the SME Climate Ambition Drive now and be part of a global movement empowering SMEs to lead the way to a net zero world! 🌱 https://bit.ly/4ecPKhi
