Climate change affects nearly all the work we do. It’s a leading factor in planning where and how cities grow. It shapes transportation, water, and energy policy debates. And it’s entered the education space as states and localities consider how to train workers for the growing clean technology economy. Some of our work focuses explicitly on climate change, while the rest works to understand how to move forward under its shadow. This week, the climate is heavy on all of our minds, and we're thinking of our friends in the Southeast who are living through historic storms. If you work at ECO, you work on climate change. Read on to learn about the ways in which ECO is helping to address climate change, from projects on water and fire to workforce for a new green economy: https://lnkd.in/gt5BGbdq Thank you to Becky Steckler for contributing to this month's spotlight! 🌟

Last week, on a sunny Friday afternoon, you may have seen some ECO team members making good on their promise to work toward a better world: cleaning up the streets of downtown Portland, Oregon. ECOnorthwest participated in the “We Believe in Portland” effort, where hundreds of employees from downtown businesses gathered to see the impact our collective efforts could have on our office’s backyard. We helped to clear many bags of trash, leaving our city's sights and streets clean and enjoyable. We look forward to the next “We Believe in Portland” cleaning event, slated for April 2025! Will we see you there?

🚧 Growing states need construction aggregate for new roads, schools, and houses. Aggregate—the raw gravel, sand, and crushed stone that is used to make asphalt and cement—comes from mines that are within affordable shipping distances of where development happens. This location requirement creates conflicts that lead to mines not being developed. For years, industries have warned of the dire consequences of construction aggregate scarcity—a reality that is now nearly upon us. Nowhere is this more evident than in Florida. Facing the risk of insufficient aggregate for both construction and climate resilience efforts (crucial for mitigating flood and storm damage), Florida’s DOT commissioned this study, led by our partner LAMPL/HERBERT CONSULTANTS, INC. ECOnorthwest answered the question: What would happen if Florida simply did not have enough aggregate? Read the study here: https://lnkd.in/g3hKaq7B Thanks to ECO's Robert Whelan for leading the effort to understand the impacts of this complex problem.
