"In a world where impacts to biodiversity will continue to occur, the only alternative to offsetting impacts is not offsetting impacts," says Adam Davis in a new commentary live on EM. "Restoration projects are needed, and the wildlife and natural systems that benefit from those projects do not know or care how the restoration work is ultimately funded." Some big developments for #carbonmarkets under #Article6 of the #ParisAgreement last week: ➡ The Article 6.4 Supervisory Body has adopted a mandatory #SustainableDevelopmentTool, now required for all projects, including #CDM transitions. A significant step forward in ensuring social and environmental integrity, including equitable benefit-sharing with local communities and Indigenous peoples. ➡ The Supervisory Body also adopted guidance on #methodologies and activities involving #removals, which have been key issues pending for the Article 6.4 mechanism to be operational. This time, the Supervisory Body has changed the status of these documents from ✴ “recommendations” to ✳ “standards.” With this, they could be adopted by the Supervisory Body itself and will no longer need to go back for approval at COP29 Azerbaijan. I’ve seen a lot of people interpreting these developments as if Article 6.4 was now fully #operational. In my view, that’s not (yet) the case. These are certainly big steps, but methodologies still need to be approved and the registry is not yet functioning. The Supervisory Body also operates under the #CMA, so we will see at COP29 Azerbaijan how this new process lands with countries, and if they will endorse this approach. Would love to hear what others are thinking about this. If you want to know more about Article 6, check our Article 6 Explainer: https://lnkd.in/diwagfW4

The Katoomba Group releases a statement to the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024: https://lnkd.in/e-YDiVYf For its 25th anniversary, the Katoomba Group reconvened last week where it all began, with a Conference on ‘Real Value for Nature.’ This was followed by an expert workshop in Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains. Participants from Australia and around the world reviewed progress in mobilizing markets and finance for nature and people over the past 25 years, identified lessons learned, and mapped priorities for the coming years. The statement lays out key messages from the gatherings, commitments made by the Group, and a call to action for the Summit. Learn more about the Katoomba Group: https://lnkd.in/egGHHfrK
