The draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 is now open for public consultation - and we encourage everyone to participate. The draft standard sets out a science-based, innovative and pragmatic framework that enables more businesses worldwide to join the 3,000 with net-zero targets or which have committed to set them. It is informed by the latest climate science, regulation, and recognized standards and frameworks, as well as feedback from businesses about what they need to achieve the collective ambition of a net-zero future. The feedback we gather from this and other consultations, our expert working groups and pilot testing will all inform changes ahead of the standard’s final approval. The draft standard aims to accelerate corporate decarbonization by: - Tackling barriers to scope 3, or value chain, action – the most commonly cited challenge by businesses - Maintaining focus on emissions reduction while exploring incentives to support scaling of climate finance and carbon removals - Making it easier for companies in emerging economies to set targets - Incentivizing ambition and action through new model to validate and recognize progress against targets We have a limited carbon budget left. Companies must act at pace to accelerate climate action, driving transformation, building investor confidence and unlocking long-term growth. Enabling organizations to take swift climate action by setting ambitious emissions reduction targets.
About us
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

What’s new in the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 regarding scopes 1, 2, and 3? Launched earlier this week, the draft standard proposes changes to scope 1, 2, and 3 target setting and we are eager to hear feedback. What’s new: Separate scope 1 and 2 targets: The draft splits out scope 1 and scope 2 to reflect the unique challenges in decarbonization in these categories. It also increases the focus on action by requiring companies to source their electricity from zero carbon sources. An enhanced scope 3 model: The draft standard introduces flexibility and actionability to scope 3 target setting. It focuses on ensuring those suppliers that contribute most to scope 3 and/or are in emissions-intensive sectors align with net-zero. Scope 3 target boundaries and alignment: The draft standard requires companies to consider scope 3 boundaries based on intensity of, and influence over activities. It also emphasizes alignment metrics and targets, such as sourcing from net-zero suppliers and generating revenue from net-zero products, providing greater flexibility in addressing scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 mitigation measures: Direct mitigation linked to specific emission sources in the company’s value chain remains the priority. When traceability is not possible, alternative, less traceable mitigation measures are proposed, with a focus on improving over time to eventually achieve full traceability. We encourage everyone to submit feedback on these and other proposed changes to the draft standard through our public consultation. Respond to it here: https://lnkd.in/efrNFSsH Want to learn more? “The economic case for climate action is clear, yet not broadly known and understood. Investment in both mitigation and adaptation could bring a return of around tenfold by 2100.” – Annika Zawadzki, BCG A new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the University of Cambridge reveals the economic risks of climate inaction, highlighting how a 3°C rise in global temperatures could slash up to 34% of global GDP this century. But there is a solution: investing just 1-2% of GDP in climate mitigation and adaptation could reduce these losses by up to 90%. Key findings from the report include: - Productivity loss caused by reduced labor output, supply chain disruptions, and the collapse of crucial industries will be the primary driver of economic damage, far outweighing direct physical impacts like floods and fires. - Losses from climate change-related productivity reductions have already reached $4 trillion in the U.S. alone. - Even a small fraction of the savings could significantly address global challenges like extreme poverty and infrastructure needs. This report highlights the immense financial opportunity in climate action, but also the massive risks of waiting. By taking decisive action now to reduce emissions, companies can help mitigate economic losses and protect the planet from the disastrous effects of climate change. Attention companies preparing to submit or developing targets! Before you submit, make sure to review the Criteria Assessment Indicators (CAI) document. This helpful resource provides insight into how science-based targets are assessed for conformity with SBTi criteria. It brings together all the key near-term, net-zero, and sector-specific criteria, and explains the minimum documentation needed to ensure your targets are aligned. Using the CAI will make the target-setting process much more efficient, as it will help you understand exactly what is needed to make your submission a success. Take the time to review— it will save you time and effort down the line! https://lnkd.in/eKPmgukf #SBTi #sciencebasedtargets

Have questions about setting targets against buildings-related emissions? We’ve compiled the most frequently-asked questions into one useful document, covering everything from the applicability of criteria to how companies can estimate data when it’s not readily available. Example questions: 1) How does the release of the SBTi Buildings Criteria affect companies that have active commitments to set science-based near-term and/or net-zero targets? 2) I have non-buildings and buildings-related emissions, how should I set targets? Do we need to use both the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard and Buildings Criteria? 3) What is the best way to estimate energy consumption for new buildings without data? With this document, buildings sector businesses are better equipped than ever to set science-based targets. Download the Buildings Criteria FAQ below and head over to our website to learn more about science-based targets in the built environment: https://lnkd.in/eAFwiQF5 #builtenvironment #SBTi #sciencebasedtargets
